You may think I am crazy, but this is true. I went to skylor pond today to kill some time before Hyrum would let us into our camp spot and I saw possibly the biggest fish i have seen in my life. I am no good at identification so it may have just been a grass carp or something but wow. Had been sitting there for a while when it suddenly rose from the depths of the huge mess in the middle. I am attaching a picture, but I took it from my phone and it was a ways a way. It was a very interesting experience.

Very possible. I just wondered if it might be a grass carp because I had heard of them planting those in other community ponds. Whatever it was, it as huge. I hope someonecarchws it to find out!

[cool][#0000ff]I cropped your pic and enlarged the fishy portion. It got a bit fuzzy but it sure looks kinda kittyish to me.[/#0000ff]

The question remains though. How on earth did a fish get that big in that little pond! Lol

Looks like a big old bass in my opinion.

[cool][#0000ff]There's an old expression "Big fish in a small pond". It refers to someone who has a lot of power in a small company...or something like that. But the principle is the same.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have fished a lot of ponds in my tubing days and it is rare that there is not at least a couple of big ol' bigguns in even the smallest puddles. That happens when one of the top predators outlives his competition and has plenty of food from all the stunted smallfry that share the pond with him.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]When I lived in northern California I was in the land sales business for a while. Some of the listings we got had old "stock tank" ponds on them. One of the conditions of taking a new listing with water on it was that we got to "test it" for resident fishies. It was common to find absolutely nothing in these ponds except bullfrogs...and snakes. But once in a while a big old bass or catfish would snarf up whatever we tossed in. And usually there was nothing else to be caught.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are lots of farm ponds around the country that have legends of huge bass, trout, catfish or other species in them. Always makes the fishing a bit more interesting if you are looking out for the Creature From the Black Lagoon while dangling your legs from a float tube.[/#0000ff]

I witnessed that fish up close a couple weeks ago. Got a good look at it and it is a big old carp.

[cool][#0000ff]Not surprised. Tough to get a good identification with wide angle shots with a lot of reflection.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]But, are you REALLY sure it is not the Creature from the Black Lagoon?[/#0000ff]

Seen some of those carp last fall. Especially around the backside behind the trees/islands (opposite the dock/deck). I hope they eat up all the weeds!
There have been kitties in there, but this year's stocking reports don't indicate any newbies. And they don't tend to overwinter well. I think the oxygen levels get pretty low in winter, what with the swampmonster of weed-beds dying off through the cold. They did add some circulation pumps that run in winter. Hot spot to cast to in early spring! (before the swamp monster rears it's ugly head!)
my boy had a fun time poking and prodding a dead cat, well - until he realized how bad they stank on the inside! Bit TOO much poking!
