[size 2]Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lake extends the tagged catfish season and offers special 2-for-one permit pricing
Santa Ana River Lakes, during perhaps the best catfish action of the year, is offering anglers special two-for-the price-of-one on regular permits the weekends of Sept. 12-14 and Sept. 26-28.
In addition, the tagged catfish event is being extended through the last weekend this month. All tagged catfish, whether planted for the just-ended Super Cat Bonanza for planted since, will pay off through Sept. 28.
Double plants each week have kept the bite excellent, and bonus plants of trophy fish to 10 pounds or better were made the past two weeks. The result of all this poundage of catfish?
"It's been awesome," said Louie Cervantes at the lake store. "There have been lots of limits, and we will continue to stock very heavily -- three times a week. Don't miss out."
The biggest catfish reported at the tackle ship this past week was a 9.2-pounder landed by Amanda Ito, Azusa, that topped off an 11-fish stringers that weighed 49.7 pounds. She and husband Jim Ito both had 24-hour passes and ended the evening with 20 catfish that weighed 86.8 pounds.
But there were at least another 20 catfish that topped the seven-pound mark landed.
John and Matthew Culwell, both Riverside, landed 12 cats that went 55 1/2 pounds topped by an 8-0, while Chad Buis, Riverside, caught 15 channel that weighed 46.3 pounds and an 8.9-pounder was the big fish.
The cats are showing from all around the lake on a variety of baits or bait combos, but the one common ingredient to a full stringer has been the addition of Crave Gravy. The marshmallow-meal worm (M&M) combo, shrimp, and mackerel have all been good with Gravy.
There are still a lot of tagged cats left over from the Super Cat Bonanza that carry tags redeemable for gift certificates and prizes worth from $5 to $100. The prizes include quality sleeping bags, rod and reel combos, tee-shirts, Lakes' gate passes and free boat rentals.
The "family nights" special will also continue through the rest of September. This special allows anglers who purchase a $40, 24-hour pass -- which has a 15-fish limit -- to bring the wife and up to three kids 12 and under for the single pass price. While the limit for all anglers is still 15 catfish, anglers can bring the whole family for a camping trip to the lakes. These 24-hour passes are only available on Friday and Saturday nights.
Anglers can fish Santa Ana River Lakes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass costs $18 has a five-fish limit. The 24-hour passes are valid from 5 p.m. until 4 p.m. the following day.

Over holiday weekend late night
cat action excellent at Corona Lake
The catfish bite was excellent over the holiday weekend at Corona Lake, but the bite was especially good for anglers fishing late at night with 24-hour passes, according to David Horn at the lake.
This was the last weekend of the Super Cat Bonanza, which featured tagged cats worth up to $100 in gift certificates and bonus trophy catfish to 10 pounds or better, and anglers cashed in on the bounty.
Bob and Susan Lutz, Corona, had an eight-fish stringer that weighed in at 54 pounds, including the week's best catfish -- a 12 1/4-pounder. Lewis Lampkins, Carson, had a 50 1/2-pound stringer of 13 fish that was topped with an 8-even. Al Schempp, San Dimas, caught an 8 1/2-pound catfish.
Horn said the best action has been at the dam for anglers fishing mackerel soaked with shrimp or anchovy-flavored Crave Gravy, and the top action has been from midnight to 4 a.m. on 24-hour passes.
The lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each $18 pass has a five-fish limit. In addition, $40 24-hour passes are being sold Friday and Saturday nights and these passes have a 15-fish limit.
More tagged trout will be added for two more special weekends in September and leftover tags from the previous event will continue to pay off through Sept. 28. For the weekends of Sept. 12-14 and 26-28, anglers buying day or evening passes get two for the price of one.
