Camping question
#1
Is there any free camping areas around American Falls or along the Snake to Idaho Falls? I am headed through Idaho on my way to Montana and would like a nice place to stop for the night along the way.

If it is kind of a quick camp there is one place in mind. Just before you get to massacre rocks like about 1 3/4 miles west, there is a fishing area. I don't know if it is an official camp area but if I wanted to get a sleep spot for the night I would do it. Ron

Not the best fishing right now as the water is high and muddy, but there are a couple eddies right in the park that you could probably pull something out of, and Gem Lake res. just a mile or two down the road.

South Tourist Park - http://freecampsites.net/south-tourist-park/

And a map, hard to find the entrance if you don't know where to look: http://maps.google.com/?ll=43.473267,-11...6&t=h&z=18

Thanks for your suggestion, I think I might know where your talking about. If I am headed up the I-15 would I have to back track towards Massacre Rocks?

Where are you coming from?

where Ron speaks of, yes you would have to jump on 86/84 and go west. It is about 15-20 minutes west of American Falls. I think I saw exactly where he speaks of yesterday and was eyeing it myself.

I am coming from the SLC area, but I am not able to leave until mid-day on the first day, and I have my one year old and the wife with me, so 4 hours is about the limit I can travel in a day.

Does the spot you are talking about take you down a dirt farm road, until you get to a spot with just a launch and a few parking/camp areas? I have always wondered how the fishing would be in that stretch. It looks wide and shallow.

I think that might have been it. It was west of Massacre. One exit west if I remember right. If all else fails a bit further west there is a nice family campground. It might be 20 minutes further tho.

If you're coming from SLC camping there will only give you about a 2 hour head start on driving than if you left the next day. If you actually think you'll get 4 hours of driving in You should be looking to camp between Dubois and the Montana state line. Stoddard Creek is a pay site in the National Forrest but shouldn't be too hard to find a free dispersed site in that area within a few miles of the interstate.

I think he is considering 4 hours because of traffic and bathroom breaks (I know my wife was always needing to stop Tongue )
