San Joaquin State Fish Hatchery Robbed: A Thousand Trout Stolen In Fresno

By TRACIE CONE 08/22/11 07:57 PM ET

FRESNO, Calif. -- Somewhere in California, someone has a truck load of stolen merchandise that probably is starting to stink.
State Fish and Game wardens are investigating on Monday what they believe to be the first large-scale theft from a state fish hatchery after as many as a thousand trophy-sized trout were taken from a facility near Fresno.
Workers at the San Joaquin State Fish Hatchery found the gate pried open and blood covering the floors on Sunday. Department spokesman Patrick Foy says the trout were 3 years old and weighed three pounds each.
The trout were part of a program paid for by fishing license fees to stock lakes for fishing enthusiasts.
Wardens are now scouring California fish markets for signs of them. Trout sells for up to $7 a pound

The Californians Turn In Poachers and Polluters [#ff8000]program[/#ff8000] (CalTIP) will give up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of trout thieves. The thieves are responsible for stealing approximately 1,000 trout from the [#ff8000]San Joaquin[/#ff8000] Hatchery last weekend. The [#ff8000]toll-free[/#ff8000], 24-hour CalTIP hotline is 888-334-2258. The value of [#ff8000]the fish[/#ff8000] and the cost to repair the damage to the hatchery elevate the crime to a felony.
On Aug. 21, between 3 and 4 a.m., someone forced entry into the San Joaquin Trout Hatchery and stole up to 1,000 large trout. They also killed and left another 70 large trout in the process. The trout weighed three-to-four-pounds each and had been growing in the hatchery for three years. DFG wardens have collected evidence at the scene and hope to get additional information from anyone who may have seen someone trying to sell the trout.
Citizens are encouraged to be watchful for anyone attempting to sell trout on the street, outdoors markets, or markets where trout are not normally sold. Physical descriptions, vehicle [#ff8000]license plate numbers[/#ff8000], time, date and locations would be extremely helpful.
