Starvation again
#1
[cool][#0000ff]It's been a while since LloydE and I have ganged up on the fishies at Starvation together. After my report last week he couldn't stand it any longer. Had to be this week. Today looked like the best shot weatherwise so we done did it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water levels are still quite high for this time of year but starting to drop. Air temp 60 and water temp 66 at launch. Very light breeze and a few teensy white clouds around the horizon. Sneaky little devils.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We both got started by playing with the dinkster perch. Then I got into a few small wallies, including a couple of footlongs. Lost a rainbow and landed another one...all in the first half hour. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Lloyd landed a nice rainbow...which was to be his last in the net for the rest of the day. He played conservationist today...long line releasing a succession of Starvation steelies. Inexperienced fish. Din't know how to hang on. But he let a couple of them have my little no name lures to take with them as souvenirs of their encounters.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Steady action. Lots of bites. Lots of annihilated crawlers. Plenty of small perch and walleyes. Only a few worthy of the basket. But we both scored enough for a meal or two. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I brought it about 7 or 8 rainbows and kept 4 for the smoker. Caught several on spinners and the rest on the pale perch No-Name. Most were suspended at mid depth in at least 30 feet of water. No surface activity at all. But a couple of the fish did put on a surface show. They didn't last week.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water was glass until about noon. Then there was a little easterly ripple. Also a couple of those cute little white puffy clouds had growed up...into dark grey mamas. And they were retaining liquids. That is until they decided to dampen our departure. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I hooked up my tow rope to Lloyd's tube and motored him in the final hundred yards or so to the take out spot. We had just finished with the dead fish pics when it started to spit...big old drops...and lots of them. Reminded me of the old analogy about a flat rock and bovine micturation. It rained heavily for about a half hour before we could finish packing up to boogie.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]To make the day complete we spent over an hour total time stopped at road flagman points...3 between Starvation and Strawberry and 1 at Deer Creek. Sure glad I cancelled my early dinner with Obama. I would have been late for sure.[/#0000ff]

Man you hit the water on a great day. Marked lots of fish on monday but not too many hook ups. Enough to have some fun though. Now if this weather would cool down so that I can get out while I have some time off this week would be nice. Trains start running on saturday again.

[cool][#0000ff]I saw a lot more fish on sonar than on the end of my line. I went over several huge schools of suspended fish. I was able to get a fish here and there but not like they usually bite when you find them in those large schools.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think it is going to really turn on again after Labor Day and after the water temps drop a bit.[/#0000ff]

TD Do you remember what the setting were on your finder when you took that picture?

Another great day, fish in the basket[fishin]

[cool][#0000ff]I have the dual beam sonar...and the dual beam function only works on Fish ID mode. Otherwise, I had the sensitivity at about 40%. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Is that what you are looking for?[/#0000ff]

Are you on Structure ID and are you in zoom is the depth on auto do you have the line ID on was your depth set at 40?

I am wondering why your "fish" seem to take up the whole screen and why on the horizontal lines there wasn't any numbers.

[cool][#0000ff]Not on zoom. Not preset depth. Automatic range. I go back and forth from shallow to deep and have no need for "focusing". Only when ice fishing.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Are you familiar with the Humminbird 565? Your questions confuse me. That is just the way it displays. The 20 degree beam shows fish marks in solid black. The wider angle 60 degree beam shows the fish only as outlines. That allows me to see that there are fish in the area but not directly below me. And that dual beam feature works only in the Fish ID mode...so it does display the fishy icons. And there were lots of larger fish in those shots. Smaller fish show up as smaller icons. Most of them were probably large trout but there were also big perch and some walleyes cruising above the bottom too. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Horizontal lines? [/#0000ff]

If you have horizontal lines with numbers on them then you have your depth lines set up. You can disable this function by going into advanced setup. I had them on once just to play with the machine and see how it works.

I have the 565 but my screen doesn't seem to be like yours. I am always wondering why others seem to mark things better. I will be more attentive when I go out next.

One thing I did was take the instruction manual and hook the 565 up to a battery. You can put it into demo mode and make adjustments that will remain after you turn it off. Also is a great way to play with it and get to know what it can do as well.

[cool][#0000ff]I have had mine for over two years and I use it a lot. But it has been a long time since I messed with the settings...once I had them basically the way I wanted them. I do not even remember some of the options available because I do not make many changes on any given trip. Mainly just adjust the sensitivity if needed.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The suggestion for getting out the manual and going into demo mode is a good one. I might do that myself. Might be missing out on something. But I have long subscribed to the philosophy that if it is working okay don't mess with it (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)[/#0000ff]
