Back to basics
#1
This last week I have been tying the good old standards tied 1 each H&L Variant,Adams,Dark Hendrickson, Light cahill, blue dunn,Renegade, mosquito, royal wulff, grizzly hackle peacock and a couple others all in size 14. today I went out to fish them. it was so fun. I would catch a couple fish on one then change, they all fooled the fish. I don't know what it is about that renegade,it looks stupid, but the fish swim clear across the river to eat it. I think I liked fishing the H&L variant the most, always has been one of my favorite looking flys.
Fishing a tributary of the weber.

That's pretty brave tying just ONE of each! I always have to have at least 4, and more if its a staple. I do like fishing the traditional flies though. The renegade simply looks like a chunk of food (insectus grandis)[Wink], and passes for a swimming/emerging caddis pretty well too. Unless trout are keyed in on a specific hatch, they'll eat anything that could be food when presented right. I did sort of the same thing yesterday with hoppers, ants, and foam double-humpies.
