StickRig and I have been wanting to get out to Birch for a while now and we planned on going Saturday. This weather is making me wonder if that would be a good idea.
Is it worth the drive from Rexburg if the snow continues through the weekend?
If it is worth it, what flies do the fish usually key in on? Any advice on where to fish? (We have never been there so any help is appreciated)

your going to catch fish where ever you go at birch. I reccomend going to kaufman campground area and parking and fishing your way up. I was there 2 weekends ago and me and my buddy each got about 150. fished mostly yellow humpys and stimulators. with this cold weather I cant say if fish will hit drys but if they dont fish a prince nymph. you will catch a ton of fish. If you want to catch alot of fish go to birch. I might be there saturday also. if I am there I will be at kaufman. Just havent decided if i am headed to birch or beaver creek.

I have never had a bad day at birch. I would go with very small dry flies if the weather is cold or standard nymphs. The fish are small and plentiful. It is a good place to practice casting and laying down flies gently, mending line, etc... Just like anywhere the fish will hit if you have a drag free drift.

We made it out there about 7:30 on saturday morning and the wind was howling and our fingers were freezing! We started out with stimulators, renegades and yellow humpy's and had nothing for the first half hour so I decided to try some nymphs. I put on a pheasant tail and a midge and still nothing! We went back to the dries because the sun finally came over the hills and Stickrig caught 2 pretty quick and I managed to get 2 more just after him. We fished for about another hour just around the Kaufman campground and then had to leave because StickRig had work at 1.
I don't know if it was the storm or the sudden cold temps but we had a real hard time catching fish. We could see them everywhere and we would present the flies as best we could in the strong winds but we had almost no takers. (I would say its because we are a bunch of rookies but I have caught lots of fish on my fly rod and have spent at least 3 days a week on the South Fork in the last few weeks and never been skunked)
So it was a long drive for not a lot of fish, but it was still beautiful country!
