Urban Pond Trout Stock 2011
#1
It's that treasured time of year when the 10" stock rainbow monstrosities that have been cooking in the hatcheries all year long get dumped into the Urban Ponds by the thousands.

- Stocking at the urban ponds will begin mid-November with weekly stocking until March. To give you a rough date, stocking began last year on November 9th.

- Unfortunately, trout are no longer stocked at Lake Mead or Lake Mojave beginning this year as of March (read about it at here). Obviously, Willow Beach is the exception to this, still stocking every week.

- If you haven't already, buy your trout stamps! 10 bucks at Walmart, the Marina's, etc...If you haven't fished the Urban Ponds for trout yet, be aware that fish and game make multiple daily rounds to check licenses.

With this unseasonal warm weather, the water temp isn't ready for trout stocking. According to NDOW, trout stocking will probably not start until late November with no set date.
BTW: Last year was a bust, All I was catching were 5-7" fingerlings. I remember when they use to stock with atleast 12" trout and later in the year they would stock with their old breeding females up to 14-15" long.

But the state is now too poor to support a hatchery practice of letting the trout grow to 10-12". It costs too much money to feed them to grow that length.

Add to that the Lake Mead hatchery is permanately closed and the state has to buy stock trout from Utah or other states. There is talk of reopening Lake Mead hatchery but they would have to import outside water because of the mussel infestation in the lake. That gets expensive.

I talked about the disappointment of the urban pond trout stocking last season. they get the trout from some hatchery in montana is what I was told.

Maybe it is Utah's turn to raise its licenses for out of staters. I know Idaho and Wyoming are a tad under $100. for us Utah folk. That money could be well used.
Plus, we offer a full 365 day license[cool]

what! where were you fishing? I fished sunset nearly everyday last year and the average was around 10"-12" with some fair sized ones up to around 14" - Hopefully a nice cold front will blow in soon and drop the temps around the valley - the urban ponds are my favorite part of winter here! Nothing beats a coffee and freezing early in the morning out at sunset or boulder city

speaking of that, is sunset going to be stocked this year? cause they have half the park closed for phase 2 of the park remodel. also Lorenzi park is going through a phase 2 remodel too they stopped stocking catfish in there, the last time they stocked lorenzi was in july. anyone got the scoop on that?

dang good question, I can't believe they're still working on sunset that's crazy - are they going to empty and refill the pond? btw, the attached pics are the rough size of what were stocked at sunset last year, no prizes but not fingerlings either - BC was about the same. Floyd Lambs best size rainbows probably got robbed by cormorants - I've always been tempted to throw out an LA Slider and let one of em take it down the gullet

The stockings I saw at Sunset last year came from NDOW's Mason Valley Hatchery in Yerington, NV. At least that's what it said on the side of the truck. NDOW can't seem to keep their website up to date, I doubt they have the money to buy trout from out of state.

Thats correct, Mason Valley does all the stocking now a days. If you ever get a chance to fish in Yerington they have a pretty good pond scheme behind the hatchery. I think there are about 5 active ponds.....trout, crappie, bass, cats. My avatar pic is from a 5 lb hatchery trout i pulled out of Hinkson Slough, which is about 1/2 mile from the hatchery. Decent fishing in that area and some monster LMB that are feeding on the trout. I have seen (not caught Undecided ) 8+ pound bass cruzin the reeds

I'm not sure if stocking will continue. They are doing some improvements around the pond, but it doesn't say anything about stocking or draining it. The article says it is scheduled for completion in late 2012.
