I've had my kayak for nearly 8 months and have never owned an anchor, partly because I don't know which on to buy. I've been told to buy a folding anchor (15-20 lbs?), but have wondered about how well it would work. Would that be enough of an anchor to hold me still in the current at Willow Beach? Or a strong wind at the lake?
Suggestions or first-hand stories would be much appreciated

You don't want a 20 lb folding anchor from a kayak - you'll tip yourself right over.
I used 12-15lb mushroom anchors that worked just fine. A dumbbell works great too.
Be careful when you pull up. It's too easy to tip yourself with an anchor.
And try buying a small drift sock. They rule on a kayak.

I saw one yesterday loaded down with a empty 12pk of keystone light and a bottle of seagrams.... The guy actually unloaded it and left the trash on the shore and paddled off...:[mad]

What a drunk d*ck!!!!!!!! I remember I was shore fishing at govt wash once and a few mexican families were having a big party in a cove I liked to fish (before it sunk a last month), as I walked back I saw that the whole cove was filled with floating egg/milk cartons, beer cans, little gatorade bottles and pieces of those foam coolers. I was so pissed off. It must be a cultural thing, but good god man...it looked like some 3rd world shore. Poor lake mead.

thank you for the advice! I never though that that much weight could hold down a kayak very well, that was my biggest question in mind. A folding anchor would be a little problematic since there are so many sunken tree's and ledges right? And the wind sock sounds excellent, just for turns and positioning right?

Depending of the type of water I use:
Lake Mead/Lake Mojave-I used a 5 lb Navy anchor on 150ft line available. I was able to hold my position using this rig. My average drop depth is 50 feet.
Small Reserviors-I used a 3lb hand weight with 50ft of line available. If the wind is coming in strong, this anchor will roll on the bottom while you drift further from your anchor point. But it works great in a no wind to light wind day. Its compact and easy to carry.
I have since bought a 3lb folding anchor. I haven't used it yet but I like the compactness of this anchor on the kayak,. Space is a premium on a kayak and the more compacted, the better. I only got a stuck anchor once. I was able to reposition my kayak to unsnag it.
I also have a drift sock that I have used. I was able to drift fish slowly without getting blown to kingdom-come.
On the kayak, I use an anchor trolley to aid in positioning my kayak while anchored. The trolley allows you to position yourself relative to the wind.
If you like to chum, then an anchor is the way to go. You can stay in position and lower a line to the level of the fish on the finder.

Bust out the drift sock when winds pick up over 10mph, and you will be surprised how well you hold position. You can line up your drifts to work a certain shoreline, and then pick up and re-run the drift. I tried a 5lb anchor once, and it never held me unless it was dead calm. I have always stayed away from folding anchors. Lost too many growing up. I am too worried about them snagging.

All this anchor talk reminded me of this great article i saw in in-fisherman a long time ago about tricks when out on the water - one was about a rock anchor where you keep a drawstring fabric bag attached to your rope by carabiner, before you hit the water, find a suitable rock on shore to put in the bag to act as an anchor and there you have it. Another trick was keeping trail mix or whatever you're snacking on for the day in a sealable plastic water bottle. Good stuff man
