Elk/Wolf Help
#1
My cow elk hunt opened yesterday and my father in law was out checking out the herd when he heard a wolf snarling and barking and noticed it had down a farmers calf with the mother cow doing its best to get it away with no success. So I plan on buying a wolf tag to go along with for my elk hunt but I'm not really sure how to take care of a wolf if I do happen to get one. By this I mean how do you field dress a wolf and what would I need to do to it so I can get a good pelt? If I get one I would like to have some taxidermist take care of the pelt so I have a good show pelt but I have never attempted any type of skinning for a pelt, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

So far he has walked away. I was knee deep in the elk today and also trying to track him down. I can find the tracks but I cant seem to get him tracked in yet.

That was an older track. Was mostly taking a picture of a track in the snow to show my friends the size. Still cant track them down. Tried to match the calling from the video but I need much more practice.

Just remember that the howling only works if they can hear you and that they can easily roam 50 miles in a single day. Even if they can hear you, it is not guaranteed to work..... even though it seems to. I've had them answer me every time I knew for sure they were in ear shot......

I know this heavily depends on the terrain, but what sort of range do you think your lungs or howls have? Or what is the furthest away you've had one call back to you?

I have pretty powerful lungs. I've started listening to your style, and trying to mimic. It sounds like the end of the howl is pretty distinctly wolfish, and takes some practice.

If you go back out this year for a wolf, I hope you video it. That was some great entertainment.

thanks ~

Go buy a howler there cheap and easy to learn and very affectiv pluss work for coyotes also.. I got a coyote howler and have gotten wolf to respond back. Just depends on wherw you place your lips on the reed is all.. can pick one up at a wal mart for 15$ only thing they wont do is a wolf bark.. also wolf are more active at sun down. Soon as the sun starts to go start calling.. and remember if you want a good pelt shoot it in the head try for one of its eyes

Cool. I guess I didn't know you could buy howlers. I'll check into that.

We called them in from well over 1000 yards once. I'd say it was about 3/4 of a mile?????? We had them within 300 yards, but never saw one. Once you find them, calling them in seems to be pretty easy from what we've found. Getting them to come out where they can be seen is a different story, though. Out of 8 times calling them in, we've only seen them 2 times.
