Lucky day
#1
Here is a post from the Pend Oreille fishing web site regarding the Gene Fink Winter Chinook Derby on Lake Coeur d'Alene. Talk about one lucky guy. Kooteny County Sheriff's Dept. could never have made it in time. Fortunate to have other boats in the area this time of year. Thought about this after reading DDon's post with a Sadder outcome. Mike

And what a tuf way to test your equipment, Damm it was cold ! We picked up a slip by the Cedar's, which was great but by Sat. morning we had to break and plow ice to get to open water. On to Powderhorn we went ! The cable on the downrigger's looked like rope frozen with ice.....by the time we got there. The water was 47.7 and a good chop from the south. We picked up six fish in the boat and threw six fish out just as fast!!!!!! Not one keeper, all were 18"-19", fat little guy's . We were busy ,I noticed that our change of direction didn't seem to change our speed.......... But it seemed our speed increased....... Our Les Jensen Speed indicator was frozen to the number plate ! We did mark a lot of fish mid lake the bite was 7:30 to 12:30 Then it dropped off for us .It seemed a lot of fish were caught . Seem's like 12-14 fish were taken to the scales. Most of our fish were caught at 60' and 90'. Sun. morning was rough , A hard cold wind from the north......And hard to fish at a slow speed . Around 1 PM a 14' boat went into the drink around Loft's.There were three small open boat's out and I felt sorry for all of them ,That's what we call hard core.Finn's called the kCSD as Dan, Jeff, and a third boat picked the guy out of the water and into dry clothes. He was OK mental but could not move anything , They had to pull his hand's away from the rope he was hanging onto. He did get one arm into a life jacket as he was turning over , but that was it . Total time in the water was around 15 min by the time Dan saw the boat upside down............ We are all so glad that man went home to his family.Ambulance were waiting at the dock at Loft's .The fisherman lost power and the bow headed south and he took a wave over the back, He said his boat sank in less than a min. Glad he's going to make it and that we had some good alert guy's around. We hooked another three fish. The last fish was around 1:30 I hooked up with a 11.66 ,at 90' ,We fished until 2 then headed in, Fun was had by all .Carlin was closed so we hung out at the park next door ,It was nice to see everyone. Fish are biting ........It's go time, see ya out there

Tough day on the ranch Kodiak! Tourneys make people do stupid things and cold big water is the most dangerous of all.

Glad all's well that ends well!

Why wasn't the guy wearing his life jacket to begin with? Especially if the wind was that bad. This one qualifies for a Darwin Award honorary mention.
