Had alot of new toys to try out this morning between me and my buddy Mike so we headed up to the only close good ice in town..yep the pleasanlty swissed cheese and very noisy (today at least) mantua. Parked on the south road and headed 300 yards off the south point of the knolls. Think I found the twins same holes from the 11th prior so I fired up the new gas auger and began to drill 7 holes in record time!! Love toy number one!!
Toy number two. New fish finder. In the hole....Depth 16 feet and fish on the first graph pass. PERFECT! Time for toy number three. 6 Man pop up Frabil ready to go in less than 15 minutes. Nice.
Experimental toy number three. New Jawjackers. (Not promoting but for those that want to learn more go to jawjacker.com). First drop and set in the hole and SNAP...Fish on. Plenty more planter slimers to follow. Jawbreakers worked great just like the videos. 4 out of 6 fish hooked right in the jaw on first snap of the rig.
New 360 degree color underwater camera from cablelas...AWESOME. Pic included below.
A few perch, some interested blue gill and several 12-15 inch slimers later and we called it a day.
Thanks to good friends and a great first ice of the season. Come on Pineview and cold nights!!

Sounds like a good day! I went on Sunday and hit 4 with the jacker. 3 set great in the upper lip, but one it didn't trip. It's legit! Mantua is better fishing than I expected.

Yep the jawjackers worked better than I thought. Just like everything else advertised I was scheptical but to my suprise they set the hook quick nice. Great product for kids that have a hard time watching their poles or rookies to the ice fishing game. We all had one pole on the jacker and the other regular set ups with TubeDude specials...(For those that are not in the "know" tubedude specials can only be obtained by accepting a top secrect invitation from the dojo master of the utah fishing chapter...lol. Red "somethings" killed them today"
Thanks again TubeDude. Ice or not those are indeed Killer!!!

That's kewl. Glad it worked for ya.
I didn't get a whole lotta love on mine for a first try. Couple pops, and one came up with the lower jig missing. So either a weed snag, or a massive kamloop trout! I'm going with the latter!
Need to try a shorter/lighter rod. Put a longer med action pole on - which I think could work on a musky. But probably not a panfish! The guys were joking that if you set it shallow - it could yank em rigt up the hole!!
It's entertaining. Glad yours proved to be effective. Sure to give it another try!!! Seems you got yerself a nice set of ice toyz! Enjoy!

Glad to see you found the spot we were at. Man I might just get a JawJacker. I am stalling though to hear more reviews.

Was the trigger sensitive enought to go off when a bluegill or perch hit it? Sometimes those pan fish give only a sight bump on the jig.

From the video clip above, I like the JawJackin a little more because there is less ware on your rod tip. Do you know what the prices are on the two devices?

You could use a loop on your rod tip with an Automatic Fisherman too. I'm not sure I like the Automatic Fisherman's method of adjusting tension. They are about the same price range. ~$40~
The JawJacker folds up a little bit more compactly. The trigger arm of the Automatic Fisherman could get bent going in and out of an ice fishin' bucket.

Since the price question has already been answered I will answer the pole question. We where using the Blizzard 30" rods in Medium and Medium Light. The medium is a good all around rod for large trout to pan as you can adjust the angle of the rod at the base. Angles for the three choices are roughly 60 degrees at the high, 40-45 for the Medium and 30 or so for the low setting. More angle equals more snap and power.
Hope that helps.

I got the automatic fisherman 2 years ago and have been very disappointed in it.
If you use it the way it is recommended the fish practically has to swallow the hook anyway by the time it is actually caught .
I made some adjustments on mine last year to make it more of a hair trigger but 4out of 5 times it trips it comes up empty.
I haven't tried the Jaw Jacker yet but from the sounds of things its a lot better than the (non) Automatic Fisherman.
Just my two cents on the subject.

The key with the jawjacker is to keep water out of the trigger mechanism. It works great as long as you keep the water out. I like it because it is adjustable for different tensions.

Thats a neat little fish catcher. I usually just let my dad set the hook...

Doesn't this device take all the fun out of fishing? Watching the rod tip and then using your skills to set the hook is where all the fun leads to "Fish on!".
I have never used one so I am not judging the use of this device, I am just wondering out loud.

All of the fun?? I thought the fun was the fishing. Kinda like saying a fish finder takes the fun out of it. Or a powered auger. Or a tent. Or a heater. Or rods designed for ice fishing. Or good boots. Or whatever else floats your boat.

Fishrmn,
I think you may have mis-read my question or maybe I mis-read your answer. I used a question mark in my sentence because I just wanted to know from users of this product if they missed feeling the take and then the fun of setting the hook when the fish makes it's initial run? Like I said, I have never used one and was just searching for opinions.
If I am understanding your answer correctly, you sound like it has not taken away any fun from your fishing.
That is cool.

i agree, why take the setting the hook out of ice fishing and the look when you get those slight taps from perch or crappie, seems to me like there running out of fishing inventions so they make one for the lazy fisherman. ill stick to "real" fishin. but whatever floats ur boat

Who is lazy? I haven't used a JawJacker yet. I will. For my second pole. You certainly don't have to. But please don't judge my decision to buy and use one by what you think is the best, or most fun, part of ice fishing. My father-in-law used to look down his nose at bait fishing. He preferred to troll. He always said he liked to feel the strike, rather than watch for a fish to take the bait. So guess what he bought for his boat? Rod holders. Kinda hard to feel the strike when your rod isn't in your hands.
I hate to have my second pole close enough to reach, and at the same time get it tangled with my first rod. Too often if it is very far away, you'll see the bite, and by the time you get there the action is over. With the JawJacker it will be fish on. Hopefully.
I'll still be setting the hook on lots of slight taps, just hopefully not from any perch.
See, I can disparage your favorite type of fishin' just as easily as you can mine.[crazy][crazy]

Again, it depends on what you call fun. If the hook set is the most fun part of fishing for you, don't get a JawJacker. You'll miss the hook set. If not knowing whether there are fish underneath you is part of the excitement of ice fishing, don't get a fish finder. If you like using a hand auger to build your muscles, don't get a powered auger. Of course you will miss the feel of the take on a rod that sits in a JawJacker. If it's important to you to feel the the hit, or the take, or the hook set don't use one. Do you ever set your rod down? Don't you miss some of the fun of jigging? Do you have any other type of rod holder?
