Crawdads
#1
Does anyone know what lakes have crawdads in them in Arizona? My kids love catching them and boiling them up to eat.

Crawfish/Crawdads

One of the best local lake that has a huge CF population is Canyon Lake. But the best places are the Trout holding lakes in the upper elevations.

Woods Canyon
Black Canyon
Chevelon Lake (also the pools below the spillway)
In the lower pools the bottom move because there are so many CF but they are small.

Get some un-cooked bacon and a hook in on a weighted line.
DO NOT use fish or the guts as bait.

Traps will work too but check the regs for more info.
It's more fun with a fishing line. They will attack a stringer of fish so be carfull they dont eat your catch.

I never thought about them attacking the stringer but it makes sense. I just figured I would set out a trap while we fished for other things. I've never actually used the trap we have the only time we caught them was in lake Tahoe. There the water was so shallow we just swam and turned over rocks and picked them up as we went. The kids thought it was great even though the water was freezing.

Well, just have fun, thats the part they will remember.

Oh, one more thing....the CF molt. After the winter sometime around April or May the CF are a soft shell and get squished real easy.

Throw them in a boiling pot, then turn off the heat...DONE YUM!
