Strawberry Friday and Saturday
#1
I fished Friday and Saturday at Strawberry over at Soldier Creek. It was -1 when we topped out at Daniels Summit Friday morning. We got on the ice about 715 and were fishing by 730.
It was fogged in bad. There was a lot of open water still on the Soldier Creek Side. No ice on the lake beyond the point by the bathroom on the road that goes to the dam. Fog broke up about 930.
Friday three of us caught a ton. Ice was about 4-5 inches thick. Caught lots of small rainbows, and several slot cuts. No busters. Only three other groups out when we were there. We fished all day and caught 109. One out of every ten were Cutthroat.
A friend of mine and I went back up Saturday with our four sons. We thought it would be a good time to get them into lots of fish. Two of them had never ice fished. We did okay, but our group of 6 only caught between 20-30. We fished the same place I fished the day before, but it was not the same. Thats Strawberry. It was still fun.
The ice is forming all around the ladders, and in the main lake. I would bet most of the lake will be capped and fishable by Christmas.

Thanks for the report! I'm hoping the same thing holds true in reverse--go one day, get skunked, go the next day, and have a red letter day. Not betting, though! [laugh]

It sounds like an exact repeat of thursday. Same conditions and between the 2 of us we pulled out around 120 fish. Most rainbows, some cuts but none over the slot.

We were there with you on Friday and caught a bunch of fish but couldn't get them to bite on worms or minnow so we resorted to powerbait. I was just wondering what you were using and what worked and what didn't.

Most of the rainbows we were catching were on the smallish size, compared to the cutts. We were catching them on small white or chartruse jigs. Cutter bugs, paddlebugs, and power nymphs.

Most of the time were tipping our jig with wax worms, but we ran out. I brought 100 on Friday, and they didn' t last. We did manage to catch fish tipping with about 1/2" of night crawler after that.

For us the hits were pretty light. Probably because a majority of them were the smaller rainbows.
