well i was planning on taking my friend who has never ice fished to Cascade on Tuesday to go and try my luck at some perch but Monday night while i was getting my stuff ready to go both my kids were begging me to go with and i can not tell them no they cant go with me. so i decided that driving 2 hours and 45 minutes to fish with my kids was not a very good idea. so opted for somewhere closer. we ended up getting to moose creek around 10:00 am. checked the ice to make sure it was safe and geared up and headed on to the hard deck. punched 2 holes and started fishing. All i can say is i have had my feel of planter trout for the whole season in just two trips. It was ridiculous every time we dropped anything down the hole they were all over it. paddle bugs, crappie jigs, ice flys i mean anything! we ended up landing over 50 trout in 3 hours. we moved all over the lake looking for crappie and blue gill and could not find them. only trout. all the trout with the exception of a couple were healthy and fat it was actually surprising how good the little dinks looked bright colors and thick bellies.
well my kids got sick of the trout so we packed it up headed to the helmer cafe for what ended up being hands down the best hamburger i have ever eaten and it was huge!!!!! i have heard rumors for two years now about how good that places food was. well now i can tell you if you are driving through helmer do not pass up the helmer cafe it will nock your socks off. enjoy the pics guys.

How much snow is up there? I like to take my munchkins sledding on Christmas eve, but I'm not sure it's going to happen this year....

Looks like alot of fun for the kids. A lot more fun than the 3" perch at Roberts pond.

Is it wrong to just want to live in a van for two weeks and try out all these new spots you are showing me?

oh im not saying it wasnt a blast. it was great! any time i get my kids out with me i am greatful and love every second of it. all i was saying is im ready for some diversity. im a panfish eating fool. we never even keep planter trout unless its in the summer for catfish bait. i dont want anybody to ever think that i am ungrateful while fishing. skunked or 50 fish days its all amazing in my mind.

I didn't think you were ungrateful or didn't have fun either. I am sorry that you took it as a rebuke. It wasn't meant that way at all! I was just kind of laughing about the fishing being TOO good. I was relating a little too well.... been there and done that kind of thing.
We too have had times with our kids that it was the very same thing! We wanted to catch some panfish to eat and couldn't get away from the little trout. It made me laugh as I remembered our frustration would have been someone else's dream trip! On the other side of the coin, we also have had times that we couldn't get away from hordes of 3inch bluegills. No matter how big the lure, they wouldn't leave it alone. Soon we were praying for a planter or anything that wasn't a mini-bluegill!
What I was trying to say was that I am sure you had a fun trip and it will be a memory that both you and your kids will keep, but yeah the fish size and too easy of catching can get boring. I should have put a smilie after the first comment about what is not to like, but the smilies don't always show up while I am doing a reply. I don't know why they aren't there, but I sometimes have to switch to basic editor to get them, and I am too lazy!
You have cute kids and I am very impressed that you chose to take them to a local pond after little fish rather than going down to Cascade after the giant perch there. You won't ever regret decisions like that.
For me it has always been more fun to catch bluegills in a ditch with my kids, than to get a huge trout on some world famous river without them. The opportunities to catch big fish will always be out there, but the opportunity to fish with your kids is a VERY short time period.
I really enjoy your posts, and I am glad to get a chance to read about other areas of Idaho. Thanks for reminding me of my own "frustrating" good times that we have had. We still laugh about them.

I wasn't offended of anything. I just thought you might have felt I was a little ungreatful. And my post may sound like that after rereading it. So I apologize for that. Cpierce your a stand up member of the forum and I appreciate all you do here.

Well said Cpierce!! Some of my fondest fishing trips have been with my kids. Now they are all grown up and married and having a hard time finding time to fish with me or just time to fish. Did have a couple of fishing trips with the grand kids for the first time this summer and it was amazing to pass the torch onto another generation of posterity. Good fishing times should still be ahead.
