Saturday my buddy and I set up a spread of 69 goose decoys on the river, we had shot 4 geese and had 2 come right over our spread. They were a bit wary and landed up river about 100 yds. We got a little bored and decided to go jump them we did not get very close and my buddy took a charity shot that happened to hit the bird, the bird made a big loop and we both took some more charity shots, I ended up leading him by about 7 feet and killed him dead. We retreived him and he was banded, the band was so old it was nearly worn off. I punched in the numbers and the goose was banded in 1996 in logan ! A sixteen year old goose! It made sense why he didn't land in the decoys after that, I can't imagine how many times that bird had been shot at. I can't wait to eat him[sly]

I would not call a shot like that a charity shot. That is how birds get crippled. I would call that a "handicapped shot." You are lucky he game down. I wouldn't be bragging about that shot at all. It was people like you that made that goose that smart and why he lived so long.

yeah I have to agree...long shots aren't a great idea on a goose but if I had known a goose was banded I would have taken that shot too!
Congrats on the band man, not many of us ever get to see one of those!

[:/] Skybusters suck! [:/] Now think about if you would have gave them a free pass. Next time they may have actually landed in your decoys, because geese are funny that way they frequent the same area day after day. food for thought.
Glad you got the old band though, I have only gotten one band and it was last year. Congrats!
only took 31 freaking years!!!!!

[sly]I'm by no means a sky buster, the birds landed upstream from us a far cry from me taking a poke when they were too high in the air. Thanks for the advice tho, it was my 3rd band of the year so I might know a thing or 2

Hello little fish, thanks to all of those who took a great story and twisted it into a story of your own. This site is full of jealous people who love to belittle people, by the way my buddy and I let 5 land in our decoys today and killed everyone of them. I am up to 33 geese on the year, and I have a feeling all of you strong opinioned folks may not have killed that many in your life!

I am sorry and I apologize for asking you not to take charity shots at the fowl. It just educates the damn birds so they won't even look at a spread. to each there own. I would rather hunt ducks any way. [ ] Bands do not mean you know anything, It just means your lucky. Right spot right time! You should go to Vegas!

Above is what I was basing my argument on. Granted I was not there when you took the shot I was just going off what you said and what you were describing. What you have told us there is that you are a sky buster. I have shot three birds with bands but never a goose with a band. You are right I have not shot very many geese, but I hunt ducks not geese. I shoot the geese when they come over my duck decoys. I apologize for being a critic but I hate it when I see sky busters out there educating birds and taking unethical shots that cripple the birds. Nice job on that many geese. I am not a jealous person at all this is a public forum and people like to voice opinions. Next time maybe just word it different because I will say the same thing to anybody that claims they sky bust.[ ] Trust me I am not singling you out.[ ]

Guess I should have clarified I land birds in my decoys and let 100 flocks go by that were 40 yds high, my charity shot is 50 yds I shoot them at 30 yds with with confidence anything over 40 even with a 3.5 incher does not appeal me, the point of my story is that I killed a 16 year old banded goose, and thought it was a good story to share with others

It sounds like you had a fun day pretty cool you got the band off a bird that old I think it is up to the person as to how far they should shoot so congrats on a great shot.

I appreciated the post and story for what you meant it to be about. A sixteen year old banded goose is pretty cool.

Getting bands does require luck, but the more birds you shoot the better chance you have at getting bands. We killed the bird so I am unsure how we educated him. I also enjoy duck hunting, but it is not near the rush of trying to fool a goose. People sky bust geese everyday and they still come into spreads everyday. I've hunted by sky busters before and it makes for a long day, we were jump shooting which is not sky busting. The bird wasn't educated he was killed.

Alight you make a good point, wish I lived where you do I would get out more. that is a fact the more you kill the better chance you have to get bands.but I have killed plenty of ducks and fooled allot of geese I just don't have the passion for the geese you do. If I did I am positive I could shoot and fool all I wanted there not as smart as people think just have to be setup where they want to be. food source is the key to being in the right spot that's it. not to hard to do your home work for a few days by following them from roost to food and set up in time to get them from one or the other.

Wow I actually enjoyed reading that reply it made sense , you are exactly right about goose hunting, it is mostly about the location. Gaining access is usually the hardest part where I hunt. However even if you are in the honey hole, you won't get a bird unless you have a great place to hide, a realistic spread with good quality decoys, being set up accordingly with the wind and motion in your spread, a good goose call, and your a good shot. 15 years ago you just had to be in the right spot but with there being 10 times the amount of pressure on the birds, you have to do everything right to kill a few.

LMAO! I kill geese over 20 yr old shells thrown out on the ice. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to kill geese. I haven't even brought them out the last few years so I actually don't know if the geese have gotten so smart they won't come into them? Guess will have to see this Saturday.
Glad you did your foot work and have all the money needed to by those realistic decoys your talking about.
Glad you liked the read and I'm sure you are a great goose hunter. Seems you got it down bud.
good hunting and call them in close. SKYBUSTERS SUCKS!!![laugh]

ok, now you told us a great hunting story and how successful you are at goose hunting. You mentioned you were at 33 or something like that for the season, lol. You must have a strong desire for being around geese. I know the feeling well, so I am here to challange you to do the greatest hunt of all. You up to it, donate as much time and energy and money to Ducks Unlimited as you do hunting them. It will surprise you how much more it really means to ya. Take care and plz don't take this as a rant, been in you shoes many times. Ducks Unlimited is a worthy cause to keep your pasion alive.

That's what I call a spread, I wish I could get away with just some old shells, but where I hunt that just wouldn't cut it. Obiously u hunt a different area because the northern region closed on the 14th. I got lucky and ended up with these 3 jewelry wearing birds, guess I shoulda left all my expensive deks home and just took my 20 year old shells lmao now!
