Big Chub Lovers + Mackey Report

If you want to catch a big chub of a lifetime Shelly Pond is producing, went there Saturday morning and atually had a pretty good time iced eight chubs with 4 being 12-13'' with one 6.5'' perch. Did a curtain pattern from the shore and found them in 22 feet of water. I never thought I would say this, but they actually put up a pretty good fight there, so if you need some bait fish go and enjoy.

Also fished Mackey on Friday, we seemed to do the best on the entire lake. I took one of my son friends with us who knows how to ice fish, but has limited experience with kokes. It was hilarious to watch a rookie try to figure out the koke bite. Finally after an hour he got the hang of it and managed to get his limit. In all we iced about 40+ kokes 3 bows and one brookie.

The brookies in there are some of the prettiest I have ever seen, minus the black spots they get there!

Chris, yeah it was a pretty brookie and my son's friend was pumped to catch it probably went 12-13'' which is nice for there. He caught it in three feet of water off the shore.

Hope its not the utah chub! I was looking on the idaho fish and game web site today and it said utah chub no harvest allowed as of 2012.

Are you talking about the state record fish part of the site? Thats the only place that I could find it saying they are no longer able to be harvested. Could you find it in the regs? Its weird they would close harvest to Utah Chub.

Even the fish Identification page doesn't have anything about no harvest allowed of the Utah Chub. It shows no harvest for bull trout and sturgeon though. I am wondering if its a typo and someone just highlighted it on accident. Maybe they were thinking leather side chub, the one you can't harvest.

In the regs it says "Nongame Fish: Any fish not specifically defined as a “game fish.” Protected nongame fish are Shoshone, Wood River, and Bear Lake sculpin, sand roller, northern leatherside chub and Pacific lamprey."

Doesn't say anything about the Utah Chub being protected here. This makes things slightly confusing [crazy]

Also, thanks for the report OvidCreek. Sounds like a great day of fishing. I caught a nice chub out to shelly pond in my float tube last summer but all I caught through the ice there was a whitefish.

Are you sure that isn't the "Leatherside" Chub? The Leatherside is only about 2 to 6 inches long, and yes, it is protected. If it is the "Utah" Chub you saw, I would like a link to the article if you have it.

OvidCreek, nice catching. Too bad you didn't hook into a brown there, but it looks like you made up for it with the Kokes

The reference on the F&G state records page doesn't say that they can't be harvested. The Utah Chub there has one asterisk * by it. That refers to the note that the record has recently changed. The double ** note is for fish that aren't legal to harvest. The notes explanation being at the bottom of each table is simply for convenience, it doesn't mean that none of all the fish above can be harvested. Hope that makes sense!

So there is a mistake with the color it appears. Thanks for pointing out there was just one asterik. It was pretty late when I was looking and my eyes must have been playing tricks on me. Glad we got that figured out.
