Traveled South searching for open water with Dr. Keoni Kauwe, his father John and son Sai. First destination was Redmond which is generally good for a pike or two. Sai caught a 2 or 3 pounder which proved to be the only fish caught. We rigged bait rods w/anchovies and then threw every lure we had with us to no avail.
We had seen open water as we passed the east side of Yuba as we passed it so we moved back to the north.
The whole east side of Yuba is open and the reservoir is higher than I can ever remember. Water laps at the top of the launch ramp at Oasis. Had I realized it, my boat would have been behind the truck and the days events might have been different.
We threw lures from the shore around the state park for a while and generally enjoyed the beautiful day.
This year should be fantastic for the spawn and maybe all the species in the lake will get a chance to reproduce before the water is drawn down. I understand that the DWR is finally going to implement a management plan and in the years ahead Yuba might, once again, be a decent fishery providing we are not plagued by drought. One can only hope.
