I use a Berkley Air Salmon/Steelhead series casting rod but they make a spinning version as well. Great sensitivity/action for a pretty decent value. Picked one up locally for $85. Mine is an 8'6" M action. Might want a MH action if you are going to fish for salmon as well, I just chase steelhead for now.

ROD shimano CSS-90ML-2a
L-9'0"
Line WT 6-12
Lure WT 1/4-3/4
Power ML
Action MF
Reel Pflueger supreme xt model# 9235xt
i thought it was a 9'6" but i guess i was wrong. I have used this rod and reel year round for three years and havent had any isuss (i fish 10 to 15 hrs. almost every weekend) and have hooked up on a lot of big fish.. i would deffently buy another. it is light and very balanced..
cant go wrong with this setup. just my thoughts.
here is another pic of some steel from this year.

I love my GX9LT from W.W Grigg fishing rods. They are not the most well known rod maker, but I've found nothing better for steelhead. It is perfect if you are float fishing and has excellent balance. I keep making the mistake of letting my buddies try it out and then never get it back because they like its castability and action so much.
I like my gear pretty light weight, so if you are trolling, spoon/spinner fishing, or after salmon you'll probably want to look at their different models with more back-bone.
Great rod for the price though!

You might want to look into the TFO steelhead rods. They have a great warranty, and feel pretty good. The Shimano Clarus mentioned is a good rod too. Just go to your local shop and start shaking rods. Check out warranties, and make the best decision for you. I just went to a sportsman's expo in Washington, and they were selling St. Croix Legend Elite rods for $180. I really wish my wife wasn't standing right there or I would have scooped one for sure.
