Palisades 2/13/12 & Mystery Fish?

Fished Palies from 3:30 to 7:30 yesterday afternoon. Was a little slow to start then really picked up. The fog started building around dusk, which made it a little difficult but overall it was a really nice fishing trip, especially since Palies has been so slow. We landed several nice cutthroat, and several good sized browns. Also pulled a few rainbows out. Then we had one strike a line like a mack truck, fought like crazy. Iced it and took a quick picture and a short video and released it. I would really like to know what it was, I am leaning towards a Splake after looking at comparable pictures online this morning, or just a strange brown, let me know what you think.

Yes, its a skinny brown, but nice. Just need to ask about these rainbows you said you caught? My wife and I fish this alot and have never caught a Rainbow? To my knowledge there is no Rainbows in this lake? If you ever catch one post a picture, I would like to see one? I have fished it once this year and failed to hookup? Good to get out though.[frown][cool]

Yeah, we definitely caught some rainbows. I gutted them myself last night. I was thinking the same thing, they shouldn't be in there, but for some reason they were. I have caught a lot of browns over the years on the south fork. If this was a brown, it was more silver than I have ever seen in a brown, that and had much larger translucent fins. Could this be because it has been hanging out in deep water or something? We had caught 3 other browns before this one, and they were all fairly non fighters, would have made this one look like it was on crack or something.

There are a few rainbows in the lake. I have only caught 2-3 in the 30 years I have been fishing there. And yes....That is a brown in the picture.

That's a brown that needs to eat a few more squaw fish minnows. Good job!

The browns that live in deep water have little color except for the black spots it is for sure a brown.

Browns are also skinny and not much fight in them now since they spawned not to long ago. Looks to me like a normal winter/early spring brown from there. I have landed hundreds in the last few years from Palies. I will admit tho the tail fin seems larger than normal as does the top fin.

As far as rainbows, they are in there and I have caught quite a few. I have caught more browns than anything, then cuts, rainbows, and the least caught are macks. The bows are very different as far as catching them there than any where else I have fished for them. I have not caught one trolling for years. Only way I have caught them is from the bank, and not just any bank either.

Yup brown. I've caught rainbows on the upper palies around McCoy creek area..

Looks like a Brown / Grayling hybrid.
