Favorite Fly
#1
As I am new to Fly Fishing, I have no Idea what flies to buy or in what size.

I found a site that lets you buy in Bulk for cheap but you get a lot of one kind per group that you buy. So I am looking to buy maybe your top 5 favorites as a collective group.

Could you Please give your top 5 go-to flies and size that would work in most situations. I'll be fishing mostly Trout in the Boise Forks in the Winter and Spring and also some Alpine Lakes in the Summer usually within 100 miles of Boise. I know that's not very specific but anything helps! Thank you.

I grew up in Boise and fished the river almost daily. My go to flies for that river would be...
1) Olive cone head wooly bugger (size 6-8)
2) Hare's ear (size 18-20)
3) San Juan Worm (size 10)
4) Zebra Midges (size 18-22)
5) Olive Elk Hair Caddis (size 14-18)
6) Parachute Adams (size 16-20

Those flies should catch you fish pretty much anywhere you go (generally speaking). The main Boise through town is a lot more of a nymphing river but I have had some great evenings there throwing caddis patterns. My favorite setup is a wooly bugger with a dropper (any of the other nymphs I mentioned). Gets rid of the need for all the split shot and makes the casting much easier. Good luck!

Hares ear
woolly bugger olive, black, brown
renegade
pheasant tail
marabou leech Brown/ tan looks like a little brown trout black, purple
the above will locate fish on just about any water Once you get started you will more than likely tie your own as its much cheaper and you can make your own variations to suit different waters plus its cool to dream up your own design and actually catch fish on it.

flashback hares ear 12-16
damsel fly nymph 8-12
Henry's Lake Leach 6-10
White wooly bugger 8-12

You have gotten a lot of good fly suggestions so far. Here are my main dry fly selections for streams and high lakes.

1) Parachute Adams 14-18
2) Royal Wulff 14-16
3) Stimulator – some gold and some green 8- 14
4) Elk Hair Caddis- brown, green, grey 14-18
5) Humpy – chartreuse, red, yellow, brown 14-16
6) Hopper, beetle, ant, midges

Nymphs and streamers:
Hare's Ear
Wooly Buggers
Zebra Midge
Copper John

I know that is more than 5, but for year around and in both streams and lakes, I couldn't narrow it down more.

Interesting, every single suggestion mentions a woolly bugger...hummm must be something to them.
I will say, I rarely use them, but they have their place. As far as WB, I use Crystal White, Midnight Fire, Hot Chocolate, and a Pale Pink all in #10 & #12. Don't forget Crystal Killers too, which are WB with Pheasant tail for the tail.

My stillwater box is way different than my river, but a few are the same just different sizes. Like Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, Hoppers. Nymphs would be definitely RENEGADE and HARESEARS add to that Copper Johns in red, PT in flash back and non, Prince Nymphs.

Chironomids would also include Zebra's.

River special flies would also add Quiggly Cripple, and WD40's and Rainbow Warrior.
Bacon and eggs are a good bet also (SJW and Glow bugs)

That's a tough one to narrow down. To be honest, most of the flies I use lately are ones I make up. That being said, here are some favorites.

Hare's Ear
Prince Nymph
Pheasant Tail
Free living caddis larvae

I prefer all of these with a tungsten bead head if you can find them. Also, if you fish tail waters or spring creeks, I would add sowbugs and scuds to the list as well.

For dries, I mostly use things that are good sized and buoyant to use as an indicator with a nymph below it. Some favorites are:

Stimulator (preferably tied with foam for buoyancy)
Turk's Tarantula
Elk Hair Caddis
Humpy

Throw in some wooly buggers, mohair leeches and maybe some bunny leeches, and you're good to go.

SOW BUGS, I so forgot the obvious. and scuds. This is in a fishes diet 24/7 365, not many other flies can claim that.

They used to be the fly for me when I used to fish Lower Fish Creek a lot. The Lower Provo too. I need to seine the water on The Narrows to see if they are in there as the fish just love them.

Still got to try that Patriot. I know the Chironomid by the same name is awesome. I did tie a copper john I call Uncle Sam:

Thanks for all the help! This place I wanted to buy from sells 12 flies for about 3.50 to 3.75. So I figured with a 25 dollar order I'm gonna have more than enough flies to get me through a few trips.

That reminds me, I forgot one of my favorite patterns, the Copper John. I'll have to try that color combination. So far my most productive color combos have been black biots and thorax with green wire, and brown wire and biots with a peacock ice dub thorax. They've served me well. Also brown with a UV brown thorax has been good to me.
