Son's First Walleye - beat me to it!

[left]Hit a canal and worked what water we had with my boy - pitched some spinners, minnows, worms, and jigs. Had a few bumps here and there - some bumps moved sideways . . . my Bear earned his bragging rights - landed the first fish.

And lo and behold - it was a walleye. No monster, but a sought species by his old man anyway! Plus he took my rod, my panther and hooked up. Then - the Bear done up and did it again- saw it in the water - about the same size he sez - but it shook him off, and returned. Had more bumps after, but no good hookups. Got danged windy out!
Measured it at 13.5 - not a fattie, but almost a notch up from a seegar, no? A first none the less for the species bucket list. Now if I can get him to teach the old fart how it's done!

Here's to a good walleye spring! It's just another danged fish right? And they do like crawlers and blades and beads - oh my!

Nice job! Too bad I wasn't able to join the party. Wednesdays are 12-hour school days for me. It stinks, but it is what it is. I might head out in the morning to try and get some fish somewhere. Haven't decided yet. Just gotta be back for class at 1:30.

Between the walleye and the nice crappie and gills you got last week, you've got me rethinking how early to start hunting around The Bear this year. Congrats to your son, I think you'll get your own eye this year too. Especially now that you have an Idaho license.

Thanks for the feedback. Always fun to see a kid get on a fish and get excited about it - for a minute anyway (yup - of the "short attention span theatre" generation he is!!!)
But now he's busy carrying on about being a better fisher, just not a good caster. I'm glad to let him have the honors!

The tree wasn't a problem, but I did donate that blue-panther to a fence of no return before we left. Next time I'll try my own spinner rigs. That's give ME bragging rights!

Before I get back up to Idaho - think I'll need a run at the little bear, or some spring-loaded river around here!

Awwh I was just ribbin ya. I myself usually keep my river holes out of photo too. Fences have a nack for not returning gear! How did it taste? Is it all hyped up or what?

Way to go CYS...your son has now got a fish off of his bucket list that his dad does not. I'd imagine that you will be spending more time in these "canals" now that you know that it can be done. How did it taste...was there enough size on that fish for some of that amazing "cheek meat" that I hear so much about?

Ya know - I've tried the cheek meat trick on a fat cat, and there was a tender niblet there. This was a pretty young pup, but even so - it had a nice firm fillet, not some floppy flimsy troutlet. The boy's got an allergy to trout/salmon - ly - as he LOVES a good smoked salmon. But said he'd want to try it. May just be the salmonoids. Sea fish seems ok.

Anywho - I'm really gonna try to get some time out for Walleye chasing this spring. The kitties kept me so entertained last spring - I pretty well missed out on spring bass, crappie, walleye . . . . but you have your tradeoffs.

Nice thing is going somewhere you have a chance to hit 'em all. Never know WHAT's gonna be waiting on the end of that hook. That was MY biggest thrill - to see those glassy eyes, and know - "Duuude - you caught a Walleye!"

Just went chasing kitty bait tonight (post to come). I wonder how Walleye feel about carplets? Maybe perchlets?
