I was going through a folder that I've made up over the years, and found an article about the fishing in the salmon Falls Reservoir south of Twin falls. It was printed out in 2009. It says that catching 15-20" Kokanee is typical, wow !! I was wondering if anyone on this forum has ever fished that reservoir, and what kind of luck did you have ? It also mentions Walleye up to 20#, but 6-10# fish are more the typical size. I see where this reservoir is located, but can't find any info on what type of roads getting there, gravel, paved?

First of all welcome to BFT! I used to fish SFCR all the time when I lived in the Magic Valley. I never did target Koke's so I can't help there. We mostly fished for trout and some walleye as well. Never got into any huge walleye but I know some guys that have done pretty well with fish in the 6-9# range. The road to get to the dam is paved, there are several places to put in though. To get to the dam just turn off in Rogerson and follow the signs, it's only about 6-8 miles from there if memory serves me correctly. That's just the only place we ever put in at. Good luck!

Welcome to BFT. There is lots of good information on here. You can use the search function, but a lot of times it is mentioned as Salmon Falls or SFCR. Lots of good fish in there, but maybe not quite as rosy as that report said.
Kokanee haven't been planted since 2009. I don't think it has a spawning population, so there might not be any of them left. Not sure on that one, as I haven't heard of any caught.
Good luck and hope we continue to hear from you.

How about perch? The family wants to catch some perch this year, which always entails a long drive, and my friend keeps mentioning SFCR for lots of species.

Salmon Falls is a great res but it can be moody. It used to have a breeding population of Kokes, but the water there fluctuates wildly. I don't know of anyone that goes after them. Most guys think that the kokes were just dumped in to feed the Walleye's.
This water draw down could also be the reason the Perch population goes through up's and down's. Last year was maybe not quite as good as the year before but last year was GOOD perch fishing. Perch were running 11 to 14 inches.
There is no way the average Walleye is 6 to 9 pounds. Last year the average I got were in the 19" range maybe 2 or 3 pounds.
Trout were off the chart down there last year. Thick and fat, I caught several that were in the 20 to 24 inch range.
I don't even think about SFCR until the middle or the end of may.
If you search some of my old posts you can read a lot about that place. I get lucky there from time to time. Ron

Welcome
SFCR is one of my favorite places to fish. It has Small Mouth Bass, Perch, several strains of trout, Walleye, Kokanee and Crappie.
Small Mouth and Crappie can be found on most rock points. The Crappie fishing is not what it used to be, but occasionally you catch a few. Perch can be found on any rock lined wall or sometimes on the flats. Trout are an open water species; however, trolling next to rock walls has produced an abundant amount. I have never caught a koke out there but they have to be in there. Walleye are my choice. I've found them almost every where. Drag a worm harness close to the bottom and wait for a bite.
Good luck in your fishing and hope you enjoy SFCR. Take some sun screen and be prepaired for the wind.

Thanks. We weren't even able to fish last year, and mid May fits the plans perfectly.

I grew up in North Dakota so walleye fishing is something I love to do. I live in Boise but my parents live in Twin Falls so we go to Salmon Falls quite often. There is only one dock area close to the dam on the north end. There are various other dirt roads on both the east and west sides but the roads on the west can be pretty rough.
We've always enjoyed fishing out there but I have a nice boat so we run all over the lake. There are some monster trout out there and the perch fishing has always been good for us. I took a good friend of mine and his two young boys who never fish and we had a day last year where we caught over 150 perch in about 5 hours. I kept about 20 nice ones and cooked them up for them and they are still talking about that day!
The walleyes are out there but it's not the norm to catch a lot of big ones. I'd say normal is closer to a pound or two. I did find a 9.9 last year which was awesome but that is by far the biggest I've ever caught. I see on the stocking reports that they've dropped a million steelhead in there in the past couple of years which should be really fun! I've never caught a koke out there but I've never gone after them specifically.
