Rigs for Furl Girl Furled Leaders
#1
I purchased furled leaders from Flygoddess last fall and had good luck with them. However, as I'm getting ready for spring fishing, I was wondering if FG (or anyone else) has any tips on how to best rig furled leaders for the following situations:
Dry flies
nymph fishing with an indicator
streamer fishing
Thanks in advance.

Dry flies, floatant. Mucilin red is my favorite, but any paste floatant will work. Just grease the line before you start. I like to leave the tippet ungreased and let it go sub surface.

Nymphing, longer leader. The indicators (specially Thingamabobbers) stay put. But I have been just high sticking lately or dry dropper. As for streamers, longer leader.

If it is a thread leader on the Streamer, I squish it under water so it absorbs the water.
That is my input.

Dries I like a 6 foot leader with maybe 3' of tippet.
Nymph, I like a 5' then att 4' to 6' of tippet (ex. 4' to dry, 2' off dry for dropper)
Streamer, I like 6' or 7' with 3' to 4' of tippet.

Thanks for the tips. My approach to leaders and tippet on a furled leader was pretty basic – usually 3’ of 4x or 5x then 3-4’ of 5x or 6x. Thought it was time to better refine my rigs for the specific type of fishing situations.

That sounds like a great start. I just don't bother tapering the tippet. The leader turns them over so nice. Plus less knots, less breakoffs. That looks good on paper anyway...[laugh]

Furled leaders are the only way to go! The less time spent tying stupid knots on the river, the more time that can be spent FISHING!!! I couldn't imagine having to build my own tapered leader out of tippet, having all the knots, adding that much more room for error in a knot. Doesn't take much for something to go wrong. Prob faster building a furled leader to once you have the right stuff and proper instruction. A 2.0mm tippet ring is a lifesaver to, can hardly tell it's there in the water. Joni's leaders are some of the best I've used/seen! High Quality!

The way I rig them just depends on the depth/current of the water. I usually just take the depth of the stretch or hole, and add 5'. I use this for nymph's. Haven't gotten into much streamers yet. Haven't messed with to many dries on a furled leader.

You've already got some great advise on rigging them, so I will just add my voice to the praise parade. FG furled leaders are the absolute best! They work so well it makes it easy to get my fly into those little brushy pockets on clear mountain streams. I love them!
