Wind torn on Mantua

WOW the wind blows up there. I got on the water about noon and it blew HARD for four hours then it let up and the water turned to glass.

I ended up with 9, nothing too big but still had fun.

Happen to get a water temp? The wind was pretty wicked yesterday. Wasn't sure I wanted to stay out, or go farther - once the whitecaps started slapping the boat! (I was at Cutler).

Good to know they're biting. Have they got the dock out yet?

Water temp was 48.8° according to my finder but when I compare it to others it is always off two degrees at least.

Was also on Mantua Sunday. I had 47.3 degrees in most places. Left before the wind died but we got skunked.

Sounds like you had a good day! I was there Saturday with my son inlaw on toons. We fished the inlet side. Around the inlet the water was murky and the fishing was much slower. I only caught one trout. Fished for Bass around the edges in the brush with spinner baits. Not a nibble. Hope the water warming up will trigger the Bass soon.
May I ask what your fly of choice was. When I fly fish Matua in the summer(mostly) I do well ith a Wooly Bugger or bead head nymhs. I need to swich it up and try different flys I think.

That was a good day on the Mantua. Your fly picture didn't work, but let me guess, a CA leech.

No CA leech. The flies were a dark glimmer leech, an olive and brown Gartside, and a green crystal bugger.

One more try on the pic (the bugger is what another guy was using that worked he had the same numbers as me when he left but it too was olive).

Now that you mentioned it, it was you (flygodess) that said you used it last year (I think it was last year) on Mantua. I tied a bunch up and fished the heck out of them.

Here is the youtube video pattern that I like the most. BTW I use a regular 6 3X streamer hook. And brown/olive is the best combo I have found so far.

The Gartside version is tied on a small scud shaped or circle hook, but I have always tied them on streamer hooks. I tried the smaller hooks and found fish hit but were only biting the tail end. Letting go/ coming off at the boat.

You can add cone heads as well. I have a step by step tutorial I think I posted in the General FF but maybe it was another forum.

Olive and Brown was my choice at Mantua, when I ran into two boaters catching fish. One was fishing Brown buggers, the other Olive, so I threw out this.

Try a Blood Mohair Denny Rickards with Burnt Orange as well.

As far as the Softhackles, Red and Black at Strawberry as well as Black and Purple. Yellow and Red (Micky Finn) and my favorite, Burnt Orangs and Black.
