For me, I tie big wooly buggers. That is, I put lead or chain eyes up front, double the marabou on the back, and maybe a tuft along the back. (will tie in a zonker strip from the head to the tail sometimes too) That has always been my go-to, year 'round. White, White/Chartreuse, Black, Brown, Red, and any combination of those seem to work. I will also put a dropper off the bend of the bugger, maybe a size 12 flashback pheasant tail or something. I'm always surprised how often they take the dropper.

How far back do you tie the dropper, going saturday will have to give it a try!

I use a bunny streamer either in white, tan for chub imitation or burnt orange for Crayfish. I don't do droppers, I take 8' of fluoro, fold it over so one side is 5' and the other is 3'. I tie the bigger (baitfish) fly - bunny streamer on the longer and a small nymph like a black soft hackle, a California Leech, Midnight fire, or a Haresear.
Type II line. Sometimes a count down to help get deeper or I will use Depth Charge. I choose 6 wt for Strawberry, but have used 5. [signature]

Ya, I have no idea what FG is talking about. For being a fishing fanatic for 20 years, you'd think I'd pick a few things up here and there... Anyhow, I will just put a slipknot on the bend of the bugger and drop anywhere from 18 to 24 inches of tippit. I also don't use a sinking line or any weight. I tie the fly heavy and am usually fishing the shoreline, so I don't worry about it not getting down deep enough. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, but this technique has always worked beautifully for me.
That being said, FG, the next time we go out, you're going to have to show me this rig. [signature]

Do your lines get tangled when you cast? I've always wanted to use this method, but . . . I don't know, I guess I just use the same old same old; the way I was taught. Also what kind of knot do you tie in the middle and does that knot slide at all? Thanks

Any time you have more than one line out there is a chance of tangle.
I put a loop in the bend and attach it directly to the fly line via loop to loop. Nothing wrong with tying off the bend, people do catch fish that way. I prefer two separate actions for two different flies. Davy Wotton, I think he has a video. That is also why so many use tags for the second fly as well. Or I tie off the eye of the lead hook. I can get two personalities of two different flies, plus able to cover two different columns of water like two different lines. I am going to try something different this year. I bought some small ant shaped swivels I am experimenting with. I really haven't had much problem with twisting while casting, but it can happen specially in wind. But I am thinking while stripping it through the water, that swivel is adding a new dimension to it. [signature] |
