I was reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splake and it says splake efforts in joes valley are underway for natural reproduction by the DNR. I can't find a source other than Wikipedia. My understanding they can reproduce if they were not heat treated to prevent reproduction because splake are made comes from two chars (brook vs lake) like a labridoodle. Tiger trout is a like a mule and it cant reproduce, because it is a trout and a char. Im curious, What methods encourage this reproduction? When would the splake spawn? Where would the splake spawn , the tributary or a rocky shore line? This boggles my mind.

I guess you should consider the source of your information. I don't believe that Wikipedia is the most accurate source....


Natural splake happen, but they happen when a brook trout and lake trout cross in nature. It is not something that you would expect to happen with two splake breeding. Instead of your analogy of the labridoodle, think more like Muskellunge x Pike = sterile tiger musky.



I firmly believe that the entry on the Wiki page are erroneous. The UDWR is NOT trying to accomplish natural splake reproduction -- wouldn't that be totally contrary to the whole reason that they use splake (ie: controllable non-reproductive species)?

I did some research and splake can reproduce. http://publicdocs.mnr.gov.on.ca/View.asp...t_ID=25089 . They made splakes that are 75% macs and 25% brook, by breeding a splake with a lake. Maybe they are making joes valley the splake hatchery for Utah, but you make a very good point. I really don't know, I am just curious is all.

They're not making Joe's Valley a hatchery for Splake. They're using Splake at Joe's Valley to eat, and hopefully control Utah Chubs. The UDWR produces Splake the traditional way, and doesn't worry about a sustaining population.

They close Joe's Valley to protect the Splake from over harvest, but not to allow them to spawn or reproduce.

• Limit 4 trout, only 1 trout may be over 18
inches.
• CLOSED Nov. 1 through 6 a.m. on the second
Saturday of December.

they close it becouse to meny butt hole jerks!! was going up and snaging the big splake in the shalows when they were up in there going through the spawning motions.. they do spawn they just dont reprduce..
