When we fish for stripers in a river, we use a white plug or swimbait. Sluggos worked on top work well. When we bounce a bunker off the bottom like I believe your doing. I hook them through the back. Weight on sinker depends on tides or current, minimum of 2oz. Our rigs, the lead is about 1 1/2 ft from the hook. If you want to tie the weight on your line any knot should work. I just make a loop and feed it threw its self. I have no idea how large your stripers get, but I use 20lb braid for my stiper rods. I've seen guys use smaller and get broken off a lot. Good luck and nothing is better eating.

Being from MD and fishing for stripers since I have been little I have a few suggestions that may help. One thing that I think would work great for stripers in a river would be an Alabama rig. MD VA DC and NJ have been using umbrella rigs for years to catch stripers 50lbs and up. Alabama rigs are just down sized umbrella rigs. Another suggestion for casting lures is a BKD. BKDs are a lure created by a charter boat captain here an MD and have taken off all over the country. They are very sucessful when it comes to catching stripers. I have attached a link to what a BKD is.

Good call BB. I forgot about the rigs, even as I have larger ones for salt. That would be my first rig to try. Rigged with your BKD should work real well.
