So what's the first fly YOU tie on when hitting a new panfish water?

If the water is clear it will be a small foam hopper, if its murkey a beadhead prince nymph.

I'm still a rookie at panfish so I don't have a go-to fly.. I did learn the value of rubber spiders and clouser minnows this weekend. Had a lot of fun at Crane Falls and was pretty frustrated at the small lake at Bruneau Dunes.

My go to fly for panfish is a Red Neck. It is a essentially a Blond Stayner with an orange beard and a red gill slash. I need to tie up some for this year.

Other than that I use black crystal buggers, gold ribbed hare's ears, ratty dragons, and red and chartreuse buggers.

There are some pictures of some of them here in this post:

The Red Neck is the one on the lower left side. That one has a green wing. I also like it with a grey wing.

Had a ton of fun casting black rubber spider into the reeds and taking decent sized blue gill on top. Then switched to Clouser minnow (never fished before) and trolled / stripped to catch others. Bluegill were very decent size, crappie very small, bass even smaller. Had greatest luck with Skunk streamers when guy in-the-know said anything white works.

Heard stories of 11 inch bluegills in small Bruneau lake. Fished all day Sunday and saw nothing like this. F and G took a tank of bluegills out for planting and 20+ boats/tubes took lots for meat so not alot left Sunday during prime time. Very interesting. Saw 75+ small bass taken but not much in the way of bluegills. I was skunked on Sunday using same techniques that worked day before in Crane. Son caught 3 bass and 3 bluegills in small lake. Really slow. Still scratching my head. Love to hear what experienced panfish guy has to say after the weekend. Go get em.

reason I ask is that I know I dont have white at home but do have chartreuse, red, black, orange, and purple I think...never thought of white..

Im going to TN in a few weeks and figured Id tie some of these up to see if I can catch a fish or two.. Im also going to tie up some red worms/red worm nymphs...

Im thinking chartreuse with red body to start... or red with chartreuse body... :-) .. and then I move on to the bloodworm/bloodworm nymph...

the hook listed for the bloodworm is a tiemco 2457... do you think that will work for the cats whisker as well.. in size 10 or 12??

That is a scud hook, you need streamer hooks for the whisker

Ive never tried anything but white marabou Might have to die some of mine different colors and try it.
I tied on a red body with white marabou and made a killing last night. Not sure what it is or why, but this is the first fly that I have seen fish rocket from one side of the pond to the other just to attack it.
