Hurricane Causes Massive Fish Kill In North Carolina
#1
CHARLOTTE, NC-Hundreds of thousands of fish died after rain from Hurricane Isabel washed low-oxygen water and organic matter out of swamps and into rivers across northeastern North Carolina last month.

Fisheries biologists estimated at least 200,000 to 300,000 fish died along the Roanoke River, representing the largest fish kill on the river since 1995.

The North Carolina Wildlife Commission says it will restock the river with largemouth bass, bluegills, redear sunfish and channel catfish to help replace those that died. But officials say the number of large gamefish will be reduced in the river for a few years.

In related news, some Washington state residents have reported seeing hundreds of shrimp, blennies and gunnels, along with dozens of rockfish, striped perch and other fish, dead on local beaches.

Tests conducted by the Washington Department of Ecology and the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group indicate the large-scale fish kill was caused by low dissolved-oxygen levels the water.
