Hey All,

Went up to the Gorge and caught this SWEET KOKANEE on my fly rod. What do you all think, new state record KOKE????

The people at the dock told me they thought it was a kokanee too. And I have never seen a rainbow with such a blue back before.

nice little rainbow, they are fun on a fly rod. want a koke? try slip rig fishing between 30 and 40 feet. tough but can be done with a little patience

What makes you all think it's a rainbow... I think it is clearly a koke. Like I said, the blue back on it was brilliant... never seen anything like that in my time.

Let's see... Pink along the lateral line. Shape of the head. Spots on the entire body. No fork to the tail. It AIN'T a kokanee. It IS a Rainbow Trout.

I don't know why the pink showed up on the lateral line, but in person there was no pink. It was really silver.

He wasn't backing you up. He was saying "if that were a kokanee salmon, that would be the funniest looking one that there ever was".

From the Utah Fishing Guidebook, Page 48.
You ought to give it a look see.

Kokanee are bright silvery fish with no definitive spotting pattern. Kokanee have a dark blue back with silvery sides. As the spawning season approaches, kokanee turn from silver to orange to deep red, and the male develops the characteristic hump on the back, elongated head and hooked jaw common to thePacific salmon. A deeply forked tail also distinguishes them from rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout.

A rainbow trout is dark green to bluish on the back with silvery sides. The pinkish to reddish horizontal band typifies the species. The belly may be white to silvery. Irregular and profuse black spots are usually present on the head, back and sides. The pelvic and anal fins are translucent pink to gray-green and tipped in white. The coloration of a river-dwelling rainbow trout is often more vibrant than that of a lake dweller. Rainbow trout also tend to have a fairly blunt snout.

The fish in your picture is a Rainbow Trout.

Me? I am not trolling (and I wasn't when I caught this fish either... ahaha). Maybe I am wrong, but I swear I never caught a rainbow like that in my life. It was just really silver with a brilliant blue back.

What helps you all distinguish a rainbow from a koke? To me, this looks just like a koke.

Nice koke! Here's a pic of my state record bluegill. It sucks when you have picture proof and nobody believes you. I argued with the DWR for like and hour and finally gave up, what do they know anyways.
