Jmax, Chick, Bass, Night tournament CBA report, 3rd place, 6/24/12, Derek81, (pics added)
#1
What a night. Me and Derek had a great time but it was actually slow compared to most of our other times we have fished together. Since Derek and I had 7th on the day CBA event this month we were looking for a check on this one and a better points score then 7th. Only one tournament can count towards points per month. We almost did not go. I am sure glad we did. Since he and I have both been on fish lately I felt pretty good about getting a nice limit. emoTongue Now keep in mind, I have felt this way before and bombed. But even with this thought since we both had to be there for the weigh in we thought we might as well fish it.

Started off catching five keepers pretty quickly but only had about 11 lbs. Three decent LM and two decent spots. Both were good spots at 2 lbs each. I thought they would have taken big spot which they would have if we had kept them but we ended up culling them for bigger LM. One of those LM started looking really bad fairly quickly since it had been foul hooked bad so I let it go before it died. The CBA has a rule that you cannot cull dead fish so if one appears to be dieing you had better let it go before it does or plan to keep it. emoRolleyes Before sundown we were culling but right after dark the bite for us just stopped. We moved five times to different areas and caught bass in each but like I said it was really slow. Most were on t-rigged and shakey rigged black worms. We were fishing from anywhere at 6/7 foot to 16/20 foot. Most fish were in or near some kind of structure of cover. Either a dock, brush pile, sunken tree, or grass. Around 3 A.M. we were both fading and feeling we were not going to do all that well. I was considering a short nap and told Derek if we did not get a big bite soon I was. It was not ten minutes later I felt one load up and set the hook. The rod doubled and up came a huge but skinny fish. It should have weighed more but looked like it had just come off a bed. emoScratch She weighed 6/4. That got us both going again and pumped up some. Maybe thirty minutes more I felt a hard hit on my worm and it loaded up again. Set the hook and it did not move. Told Derek this was a huge fish. I was about to comment on how I hoped it was a bass and before I got it out it jumped. emoEek Yes!!! Huge bass. I fought it down some and Derek got the net under her. She was fat and healthy Came in at 8/4. Those two culled one of our spots and our smallest LM. Maybe another fifteen minutes went by and my line just stopped. emoConfused Never felt a hit but it stopped. I just held it and it slowly moved. I set back on her and up came a 4/2. emoDance There went our other spot. I think we were pinching ourselves to see if that was really happening or did we just take a nap and were dreaming. Three bass in an hour at 18 lbs and 10 ozes. emoApplause Now we knew we were in for a check. All those fish came on an old creek bed with about 16 feet of water with a hard bottom. I think those bass were in that creek bed feeding up on shad and bream.

We moved around a couple more times but only culled ozes on the other two smaller fish. I was talking with Churly on the phone to make sure he was up and bringing the stuff for the weigh in about 7 A.M. As we were talking my rod just started bending. I had stopped fishing and it was just sitting there. I set the hook with one hand and had the phone with the other. emoCrazy Rod doubled and I told Churly I had to go. Up came another bass that appeared to be a good 4+ pounder. Fought it in another 10 yards or so and she was about 15 feet from the boat when she went on a dive. "POW!" line breaks! emoHoppingmad That is what I get for not re-tying. That fish cost us second place and Tow Boat. emoBooHoo

Still...can't complain about 25+ lbs with five bass and coming in at 3rd in a CBA. That is a very hard tournament to win and usually just placing is doing good. Had a great time, thanks to all who fished it. The TWRA for being there to check out the bass for records. emoThumbsup Also my fellow officers for all the hard work. There was 6 boats with over 20 lbs that did not get a check. Paid 9 places last night and had 53 boats fishing.

C-ya on the water.... emoAngler Jmax
