A Slice of Heaven and a Pie of Hell

HEAVEN

Went up to the Brighton Lakes area with the fly rod today. Hiked up the Brighton Lakes trail, and got plenty of odd looks with that big net of mine hanging out of the pack. One person asked, "are there even fish that big up there"? I just Smiled and kept on walkin.

Got to the 1st lake on the list.....Lake Mary. The water level is up from the winter time, but not as high as it should be this time of year.

When the heat comes on, people must forget about the "no swimming rule". This species of sea lions was illegally introduced to Utah, likely from a coastal state.

I made my way to the inlet and started casting the fly rod, got some tugs on the line, but they were Shiner Minnows. After an hour of no luck with some real fish, I went for the higher lakes.

Stopped by Lake Martha looking for signs of life. Apparently I took too close of a look, cause I fell off a hidden ledge, going straight into the water. Needless to say, there was no life in that lake.

Soon the lake was down below.

The last lake on the "to fish list" was.....Lake Catherine, got to the lake around 6pm. A walk around the lake was done proir to getting the line wet. Soon the fish were located.

Started with some "soft stripping" and BAM got some hits, but no hook up. Then the 1st Brookie came to play, ahhhh skunk averted!

When the sun went down the action did too. Ended up getting 10 Brook Trout, had probly over 30 bite, shake, and get off. The Nymphocator Tung was the ticket.

On the way down I wanted to check on Lake Mary again. However I took a wrong turn and ended up at Dog Lake, which had no signs of life.

Compared to TDT's day....it was just a slice of heaven up there. Can not wait till that area freezes up with ice again next winter!

HELL
So I stayed at Silver Lake as I am taking antibiotics for my jaw, which means I need to stay near the bathroom and certainly won't be hiking anytime soon. So I took my dolly and hauled my gear on wheels to the dock area. The crowd was like being in an olympic stadium. The amount of kids made an elementry school look small. You should only have to hear the words "daddy daddy daddy" like that if you are watching a porno film! Ugh I was hating every minute of the place, well except the one minute I caught the one 7 inch rainbow of the day.

The bait chuckers on the dock just made my day all the better. If I showed up to the right of the dock (not even close to the dock) the bait chuckers threw all their bobbers to the right, if I went to the left they all tossed the bobbers to the left. It was like I was a surface to surface missle and they were a patriot missle trying to intercept. [#000080]Deleted[/#000080] they were a motion activated system complete with auido. Oh the things they said. Yep should have stayed home!

Sounds like a nice day out but they were right you didn't need a net let alone that big[laugh]. I made the same mistake yesterday. Hiked in less than a mile as my foot injury isn't quite 100% healed. Brought my 20 inch net as big fish are always a possibility where I went. Ended up with a few dozen 13-17 inch trout and never even bothered with my net once. A few of the browns had blue halos around red spots. Always makes me do a double take to make sure it isn't a damn brookie.

Oh about time an angler goes out fishing and makes a nice post about his adventure. teheee... your photos reminds me of backcountry adventures in the Cali- High Sierras. (don't ask me about hand-fishing there. . . .5th)
Maybe I'll get my sorry butt off the marsh and into some mountains up Iderho way soon. My annual Sawtooth Pilgrimage, and this time - the fairy wand gonna get flung!

Dig the 'sea lions' - maybe they're Cutters!

Sounds like you didn't read the "no swimming sign" either - with your little plunge. Ah chilling out . . . if only you had a spear while you were down there . . . mighta found the real trophy!

So here you are with a big net, and little fish, and I go finding a hog channel cat while netless... right place, wrong time... go figure.

Thanks for the post.

TDT - sounds like going to a Disney Matinee on Saturday. Ugh. I'd edit your comment about the "oh daddy daddy daddy" biz, but I'll have to stop laughing first.[cool]

Why the confusion with brooks and browns?

I'd leave that big net at home. Unless you like to pack extra weight and never use it.

I went up this morning and had about the same luck as you. I got up to mary around 830 am and fished the south end where the inlet was with no luck at all. I didnt even see one fish jump all morning which I fished thier till 945am. That lake sure is something to look at though. Headed up to catherine next and fished it till around 1045 with only 1 fish netted and another good sized one missed. Was using a renegade with a black zebra midge and then tried a rainbow warrior with no takers. Tried the dam at mary on the way back down and still no sign of life. Sure was slow but the views almost make up for it!

The confusion is just the color of the halo is what stands out bringing it in quickly. Plus most browns in there have many more and smaller spots. Just a bit atypical for that stream and takes a second longer to see what it is. The net comes in handy on streams like that where I have to negotiate fast water and the banks are full of brush and even trees like in the pic. Even if it takes 5-10 times out and a several hundred fish to get a big one sometimes it's nice not too lose your biggest fish.

You could be glad you had one at Mary. Slight chance, but you could.
