The Costs: With 5,000 pleasure boats traveling through the canal annually, it will cost the public $100,000 per boat to keep the canal open. More than $200 million per year in revenue from fishing Lake Champlain will be at risk. The Lake Champlain ecosystem will be threatened by major change, including the decimation of some species.
The Benefits: Millions of dollars of public funds will be saved each year. Much of the funds to disconnect the canal have already been saved. Lake Champlain's health will be protected, as will our economy. The lake's world-class fishing, boating, paddling, and swimming opportunities will only get better, attracting more visitors and anglers from around the world.
With the spiny waterflea closing in on Lake Champlain, we must act immediately to close off its route through the Champlain Canal.
It's possible with everyone's help!
