Greyling trip
#1
Last Friday my nephew wanted to go for a fishing trip and wanted to go for a hike. I decided to go try an area I hadn't been to so we went in search of greyling. I decided to hike in to Fish Lake, Sand Lake and Round Lake. I dug through the topo maps but couldn't find the right one so I went online and found some maps and reports. Several reports talked of a loop on the trail but I didn't exactly know where the loop was. On our hike up Dry Fork we came to a river crossing and a fork in the trail. They were letting out a bunch of water from the lakes and the river was very high. I figured that the fork in the trail must be the loop so we took the left fork that followed the river. Unfortunately after a mile or more and a lot of elevation gain the trail vanished. We didn't feel like back tracking and bushwhacked through the woods following the stream. We eventually made it to Fish Lake after adding a few extra miles to the journey. The greyling were taking black ants off the surface so I tied on an ant pattern fly and the fun began. On my first two casts I got three bites and two fish. I have no idea how many we caught but it was a lot. Around lunch time it slowed a bit so I went in search of the real trail. Once I found it we went down to Sand Lake. At Sand we caught fish almost every cast but they were smaller. We then headed to Round lake in the afternoon. At Round we caught bigger greyling but the action was slower. From Round we headed down the trail that we should have come up and it was very rocky and steep. At the river crossing where we got off track we were going to have to take off our boots and wade across since the water was quite deep. However there was a cow moose and her calf 15 feet off of the trail and I didn't want to try to outrun a moose bare footed so we bushwacked it down the other side of the stream until I found a log across the stream. So the trip was a big success even though we logged about 11.5 miles instead of 9. The one advantage of the wrong way is that it isn't as steep. So if you want some greyling these lakes are a good bet.

Hmm I wonder if that was "jingle bells". That is what I called the Cow Moose that hunted me down back to my car. She really went out of her way to get me. Man she was pissed off! Hint hint.....she hates keys being "jingled" at her!

Anyways nice work on the grayling! They sure are fun to catch but the fight isn't anything spectacular. Too bad about the camera. That river crossing is always a tad deep but wet shoes is just the name of the game if you go up there.

Any pesky mosquitos? Did you see anyone else while you were up there?

Nice. I spent a night up in that area with a buddy last weekend. We came in over the ridge to the east though. Parked just North of Whiskey Island Lake and hiked in. It's only about 2.5 miles that way but you have to go over the ridge. The grayling action is HOT back there for sure.

ya grayling fishing is only good in spring time after that there picky. Remember never gingle your keys because maybe jingle bells aka the moose that attacked TDT might get you one day XD.

Ya i know how you feel about the hike even when my knee cap shifted around when hiking there not a fun day going back to car.

No mosquitos which surprised me. We saw one backpacker at Fish Lake and a boy scout troop that was just above Round Lake and headed for Fish Lake. The only other folks we saw were two young guys hiking in with their bows for the archery hunt. If there had been any mosquitos they would have attracted plenty since they were only wearing their underwear and boots.

Sounds like the bites and catching were pretty hot. Reward for the journey!

Didn't have a cook stove with us so we released all but two limits. They were very tastey when we got home so we should have tried some up at the lakes.
