I normally fish southern california surf and a few weeks ago I broke off 4 leopard sharks on 30lb mono that I have had excellent luck with in the past and was considering switching to a higher lb test braid backing with a mono leader and perhaps some very high lb test for a short bite leader (36 inches or so) and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on brand or perhaps technique that would work well. Ideally I would like a setup that would have backing strong enough to handle anything from lighter rockfish species to 40 lb yellowtail and some 5ft leopard sharks that I can cast long distance and switch out my leader based on my application. thanks in advance for any advice you can give and I appreciate any tips or pointers,

I've been investigating this myself. I just assembled a Surf combo: 11' rod and conventional reel from eBay and craigslist. I need to spool the reel.
I've never used braided line, but I hear more pro than cons. I guess the best thing to do is buy a spool of braided line. Walmart sells PowerPro line for a good price.

i filled my first spool with braid and learned that 125 yards of braid only fills half of the spool, use to use 12 to mono or flourocarbon. quantam bait casting reel.
it seems, depending on the braids test, that it takes about double the amount to fill the spool. i should have bought 250 yards of 30# braid to fill it. i use stren sonic braid with glide coat tech. you will need something very sharp to cut it too. [fishin]
ps . it will cut you open in a moment, braid line, many use flourocarbon leaders. i like braid very well and am going to fill all my reels except ultra light.
