Nebraska Fly Fishing

Construction has been slow this year so I had to do some truck driving. I used to live in Nebraska so I know a few places right along the interstate where I can park a big rig and do some fishing. A non Res Lic runs about 60 bucks....for one complete year, meaning I bought my lic in May and it is good till next May.

I carried two flyrods in the truck, one a Redington CT 7'6" 2wt and a Cabelas PT 8' 3wt. Below is a portfolio. I highly recommend through travelers to give Nebraska a try. Most of the bass I caught were on bluegill flies and were small....but fun.

Those interstate ponds going across the state are way cool and lots of them. A few of them have Muskie and Tiger Muskie but not many. I am glad you posted.
Did you stop at the Mormon Lake one near....I can't quite remember the town. I think about where the arch is. It is a great looking area but I have never stopped there as it seems like something you want to stop at for a 3-4 hours minimun and just hasn't worked out.

Mormon Island is off from the Grand Island Exit. I didn't fish there. There are a number of rest areas near North Platte, Kearney and Grand Island that have small ponds right in the rest area for travelers to stop and fish at. All hold fish. I also fished the ponds near Wood River Exit as well as Alda Exit as there was a truck stop across the street. In the western part of the state at the Chappel Exit not far from Sidney, holds some great fishing.

As for taking the time to stop and fish, most of the time my fishing trips were no more than one hour long. Sometimes, it would work out so my day ended near a good place to fish and I could get in some evening fishing. You can Google "Nebraska I 80 Interstate Lakes" fishing info and you will have all the info you need, including what kind of fish can be caught at each one.

I caught Bluegill, Crappie, LM Bass, Green Sunfish, Rock Bass, Channel Catfish and Redear Sunfish. I had a ball......just the thing to get the heck out of the truck and unwind.

Kudos to Nebraska for setting up their Interstate and rest areas like that. Definitely impressive!
