Friday night fights with da Bear
#1
A little jaunt after a hell of a week. Daddy needs his tugs! Fish weren't real cooperative, but I was convinced they were there, just needed proper coaxing.
Pitched a crawdad yummy, but must not have been salty enough, so switched up to spinning for some Crappie action. Few swipes, big misses.

Of course - glutton for punishment, kept at it. Changed up patterns and got some hits. Got some Crappie to sign my dance card. Switched again to the 'ol Chigger Craw, and got a big bad whamo. Slammed up against the ropes - this pup gave me the glove. Nice fat smallie was a step up from the smidgelings that had been teasing me.

Had some nice company and chit-chat with a fellow angler as we pitched curly-tail grubs, and put the hurt on some more Crappie.

Not my most stellar outing, but some nice hookups, and nice to trade tactics and stories with a fellow angler. As the sun set and the sky took on a great glow - we both booked out as the cold and dark set in.

(FYI - I landed a bunch more than two fish, just too busy trying to not "talk with my hands" to take shots at 'em all)

Sounds like a fun outing John, thanks for sharing your report and pics. How big was the smally?

Good work CYS....that river is the only place in Utah where I have landed a Black Crappie....for some reason the bluegill and yellow perch on the plate tasted better[crazy]....but don't get me wrong...those papermouths still were some gooooood eating!

Whats with all this Bear River fishing lately.....is Hyrum and Mantua not fishing well....or are you just trying to become the next forum Leaky?[Wink][Wink][Wink]

Keep the posts coming CYS.

Yote nice, so the Bear still treated ya better than Idaho. So was your new aquaitence driving the blue avalanche? He was out there most of the weekend but I missed you. Good to see they are still biting. I noticed the water seems to be clearing up a little bit in the reservoir is the river getting better as well? Are you trying the cats anymore? This can be a great time to nail the channels. Wish I had my farming done so I could play. It's coming along hopefully in a week or two I'll get a fishing trip in. Later J

Thanks Wiper - 'preciate the bump. Was thinking folks were tired of seeing the same 'ol bass-n-crappie (even though they're actually different ones!)

Thanks Evil one. I'll probably hit Mantua a bit more into the fall, once the green-pee-soup dissipates. It's sure to be the first outing come ice... Hyrum - I've been close to hitting lately, but then there's the W I N D. Blew me off Cutler last couple attempts for a float trip. Plus seeing the grundles of even smaller planter bows they stocked up with - might be even tough to weed past into a decent bass or perch.

The Bear is close to work, I've got some access points that don't require a launch, and seem to keep getting lucky once in a while.

For me it's Perch, Crappie, then Bluegill - far as preference for taste. But the Crappie definitely take the "size" factor over the others.
At least I got me a perch fix yesterday!

I did bring my dog out fishing a couple times. She managed to stay out of my bait, and off my hooks, so that's good.
Took the kids up Blacksmith - and actually caught a trout with my bare hands! (just for kicks - it got a quick release). Saw plenty around - and shoulda taken your lead a flung a fly at 'em, they were rising.

One trip - seemed like the water was really up, then the next it was down. Couldn't really tell that it was clearing, actually saw a lot of green mossy debris on the surface.

My bud did say he was going to be back out Sat. morn, but thought he had a reddish/brown sedan. Could have been driving a different car.

Did run into some bitty kitties a couple weeks back, and with some of the talk - might have to try the fall cattin. Part of why I wanted to try some Cutler trips. But maybe the river's a better plan.

You gonna make it up to Bear Lake this fall? Good luck with your harvest!

I'm hoping for a BL trip as soon as I can but might be October with the hunts and fall planting. I guess if I'd take a little time off I could get my farming finished but things are sort of busy lately so it's hard to be gone. Don't think your new acquaintance is the BA guy he is always in the same rig. Well thanks for keeping some good fresh stories on here it was getting a little short on new local stories. Later J
