Blues, Greens, Yellows and Pumpkins...Fall is here!

With the dark skies on Sunday, our plans of Causey Reservoir quickly were abandoned once rain started to hit the windsheild near the I-15 on ramp. Not wanting to waste gas (more like gas $$$$) for fish and weather that would likely not cooperate we opted for hitting a special body of water.......ended up catching over 50 panfish, which included, Green Sunfish, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, a Pumpkin Seed, and a few small bass....all in just 2 short hours. The predominate catch was mostly Bluegill, which fight well if you consider the pound for pound factor. All fish were released and the majority were caught on the "Psychodellic Prince Nymph" off the fly rod.

Gotta love days like that. I've never caught a pumpkin seed before. That's a cool looking fish.

I heard the easiest way to tell a green sunfish from a pumpkinseed is the red tab on the back of the gill plate of the pumpkinseed, and the sunfish having a bigger mouth. It's hard to see in the pictures, did you guys notice them. I've caught fish like that before but, but discounted them as pumpkinseeds because they didn't have any red gillplate marks, and just thought they were brightly colored green sunfish/bluegill hybrids. Were the fish I caught actually pumpkinseeds? Any good tips on differentiating them?

Nothing like some hard fighting panfish, especially on the long rod. I have an 10.5 ft 3 wt that is an absolute riot. Glad you got into them.

That's a real pum-kin alrighty. And I didn't think Utah had 'em on the list. But somewhere's must. They get bigger than 'Gills don't they? Sure have some nice colors.

Makes you think where some of those bass plastics come from. . .

Sunset Pond has them........and I must agree...they sure are pretty fish! Got that guy right back in the water!

The green sunfish has a rounder, thicker, body than the pumpkinseed, which has a more broad, flat, body like a bluegill.
