Northern Utah Ice
#1
Any predictions for ice up north? At this rate I am guessing mid Jan.

Man this warm weather is bumming me out.

Yep 40 degree nights in the valley. Feels more like march. Including wind. But warm weather and high winds dont make for great ice making. Have to head up to higher venues I guess.

ya i thought we were going to get a cap on the lakes when it was real cold over the weekend and there were skims of ice at the provo boat harbor and now its gone like that. if it stays like this all winter we might not be ice fishing anywhere for a bit. lets keep our fingers crossed for a good cold snap.

It's about all gone on the sloughs in Benson today. Crazy weather but it could all change in a hurry all it will take is a week of cold stuff. Wonder if we'll get it this year? J

Do you ice-fish the sloughs? Seen a few marks and holes later last year.

Tony's Grover is iced up. Or it was last week.
I'm thinking about hitting rivers again.

They're calling the next phase a "cold front" - but the temps don't look chilly enuf for good ice! But if we get enough cold nights. . .

I went driving out and about today and yesterday. The sloughs are a lot worse now than they were yesterday. But I don't know how thick the ice was. Hit the one little spot we did last year on a slough (you know where) and caught 2 little gills. There weren't a lot of fish there. Let me know what you are going to do Saturday. I need to go somewhere.

I was going out duck hunting and had to break through an inch or so of ice with the boat. went out again yesterday. a lot of the ice had melted and blown off. but south of the old wood bridge on benson there are few open pockets of water. Newton is open water except for the upper end. doesn't look at all safe though. Crazy newton is one of the fist lakes to ice up and its not even close on december 13th . But i figure that will change in the next week or so.

Checked the horse shoe last night and it was mostly iced over except for a couple open spots along the north east arm. So what happens if this ice is rotten and then we get cold and more ice? I guess you need more inches before its safe right? Been a good year for keeping the ducks and geese around longer though. Guess I should be hunting instead of trying to fish. It's sure not looking like a great ice year, we may get cheated with a short season again this year. Well good luck on the birds. J

I have been on the ice a few times so far. 2 of us caught these and a few more north of the border. Ice was not safe so I won't say where we were. My boot print in the bottom corner is a 12 for reference. I love early ice.
