Identify this fish
#1
A friend of mine caught this today and thinks it a white bass. I say it's a striped bass or a yellow bass. Neither of us are experienced with these fish at all and don't really know the difference between the two. Can you tell us what it is?

How long was it and how many did he catch? In Utah we have white bass that are normally 10-12 inches but as big as 17 inches. The lines are darker than most white bass but that could be the water they are caught in. My guess would be a wiper, do they even have those in your state? They are a cross between a white bass and a striper. His is one I caught here last fall. The broken black line is the key to what it is.

Here is a pic of some white bass. I'm not sure what a yellow bass looks like, so that is possible as well.

Looks like a young Striped Bass to me because of the back dorsal fin and the bold but jagged dark stripes.

Thank you Guys all for your help. We think we came to the conclusion that its a yellow bass. It's hard to tell in the picture but it has a yellow shade to it. We ruled out a white bass because the stripes are so prominent. It was slender enough to be a striper. So I thought possibly a mix between the two like you guys have said and then he told me it had a yellow shade so we figured it must be a yellow bass. We found out yellow bass are quite common in this river. Thanks again for your help.

Looks like you are right, I typed in Yellow Bass in a search and this pic is what I came up with.

Yep that's the exact picture I compared it to. Thanks for your help. I never knew anything about them until now but now that my buddy found some we just might start targeting them more. Our state record in AZ is 1lb 15oz so we'll see if we can maybe top that one day.
