new guy from the driftless
#1
Hey guys,
I am moving to SLC next week from good old Iowa. Let's hold the corn jokes. I just graduated from the university of northern Iowa last May. During my time there I started fly fishing the driftless area (I will be surprised if anyone has heard of it) and developed a passion for the sport. So much that I am moving to SLC for the opportunities in the fly fishing industry. Anyway, first step to getting involved is meeting fellow fishermen, so, here I am. I belonged to a forum in the driftless and found it to be an excellent vehicle to both meet people and swap techniques, patterns, streams, etc. Creeped on this forum for a while and it seems full of enthusiastic sportsmen/women . I enjoy fishing running water, however, a healthy amount of reaearch has brought the stillwaters of Utah to my attention, especially the musky in newton reservoir and the trout in the high uinta lakes. I also spend a lot of time in front of the vice, unforunately, it doesnt show! just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to participating in the forum and hopfully meeting some of you all!

Driftless area? Have you been chasing those browns and brookies in Wisconsin?

It's too late. It sounds like you're hooked.

Get it? I made a joke. "Hooked" because it's fishing. Man that was corny wasn't it.

You've come to the right place. We have a bunch of river experts and some stillwater experts and some that can do both. Welcome.

Welcome to Utah. I've also heard of the driftless area but wasn't aware it extended down into Iowa a bit. Fishing never sounded good enough to want to fish but I have been in that area several times. I'm mainly a moving water guy. I save most of my stillwater for ice out, escaping the extreme heat, when I'm injured and when I get too old for rivers one day[laugh].

O yes I have spent quite a bit of time in Wisconsin chasing both browns and brook.
Riverdog- there are a dozen or so wild fisheries in Iowa and another couple dozen put and take streams. The driftless is an excellent fishery. Wisconsin is probably my favorite simply because of both the diversity and number of spring creeks with wild browns and brooks. Fishing amongst horses and cattle! You would be surprised by the number and quality of fish. 20 in. Browns are not all that uncommon and many streams have 1 or 2 thousand wild trout per mile! It cannot compare to the west but is an awesome fishery with beautiful surroundings.

And old troller and would say hooked is an understatement! It has completely consumed my life and I love it!

Anyway, I am planning on stopping at a river to fish on my way out there. Can't drive through the west without fishing! I am thinking either miracle mile on the north Platte or the green at little hole. The plan is to throw some junk to some big kype jaws, however, I will have my backup box of midges larva and scuds just in case!

Any suggestions?

Both rivers are frigid this time of year. Little Hole less so than the mile, and much less wind to deal with. Fish are in "slow" mode though. Dead drift small stuff on the Green, as the fish aren't too interested in chasing anything down. Anything works where you have 10,000+ per mile like the Green has, but nymphing will be best. Fish from mid-day to late afternoon for less ice in the guides and livelier fish. If you see some risers, which you will if you keep your eyes scanning, feed 'em a #18 griffiths, ant, para adams, cdc emerger, any sparse midge, something like that. Sparse, and low riding, in the film usually works.

Toss the "junk" in the shallower, yet slower, riffles from 1-2 feet deep. Tail outs and gravel bars. They will eat it if you make it fairly easy for them.
