Backpacking or hiking rod and reel combo's?
#1
Hello All,
Was wondering who owns a rod and reel set up primarily for hiking or backpacking, what you own if so, do they like thier current set up, and what they like about it?

Also what are the primary things you look for in a back packing rod and reel combo?

Much of my fishing is associated with hiking and backpacking so I own many rods for this purpose. My only criteria is packs relatively small but still a good rod. My favorite spinning rod is a 4 pc Griggs GX 652-4 mls. Sensitive enough for small trout in stillwater but has also landed many salmon out of the ocean.
I mostly fly fish and most 4 pc rods are easy enough to bring in. Dpon't have a favorite. I own a handful plus one 5 and one 6 pc rod ( last 2 are both cabelas stowaways). Reels aren't an issue with packing in so use what you like.

I had to make my own combo's

I own 3,

Shimano Quick Fire Reels
Sport Fisher Tellicopic Rods 5'6"

the one not shown has a revercable handle to turn in to a fly rod. aka 2 pc tellicopic.

criteria,
[ul][li]it must fit in the glove box, [/li][li]it must be large enough to handle a 15lb carp from time to time. [/li][li]the reel must have the quick fire triger for casting,[/li][li]the reel must be rated for 4-8lb line with spare spools [/li][li]they must have good life expectancy[/li][li]the spools need to have a line notch, mostly used when the spool is off the rod.[/li][li]dial drag in the rear[/li][li]the battle drag leaver is a nice option if you can find it, it helps to go from slip to the full pre-set tention by the throw of the leaver[/li][/ul]
I have owned all three of my tellicopic rods for 35+ years, they have held up well. I paid $2.35 for each rod.

I have replaced the reels on two of them 20 years ago, for second reels I went with the shimano quick fire.

I have landed 20+lb carp with this combo along with enough gills and panfish to feed an army.

I still have the original fly reel.

These are my main every day go to rods and reels because they fit in to my tackle box and it is grab and go.

they fit well in to my back pack along with a pocket size tackle pouch.

the only down side.
I have had to re-glue a couple of the eyelets back in to place, but that is due to my slaming the rod sections in hard. That is my fault and not the rods.

one of the unique things about my setup is the laughs I get from other anglers is when I pull my rods out of the box and with a flick of my rist I have my rod extended..[laugh]

if you are talking abouit those short stainless steel rods, I have seen them, and I know a couple guys that have them,

For the most part they just sit in thier ice fishing buckets. Ocationaly they will pull them and use them for set lines.

The problem with the steel rods and handles is, it get COLD!. So unless you would like to bring on early arthritus in your hands, there are 3 seasons in areas like yours and mine where they would be uncomfortable to use.

They do have some weight to them as well, so if you are counting ounces when stacking your pack you may want to concider that factor as well.

otherwise they are sturdy, handle nice, reels are not to shabby. and aside from being a lightning rod "for wormer climates or mid summer" I would give them **** out of 5

I see them on bft advertised but no I never heard of them.[Smile]
Do they come with a spinning reel "I like spinning reels"
and are there any videos I can check out
Hears a video I made with my glass rod
You can also see the video on ESPN[sly]
My very first fishing rod I ever got
Its one of them Glass rods from Disney "Hanna rod"
SOLID fiberglass 100% NOT HOLLOW
.http://youtu.be/1q3scFUjkX0

I own 4

100%

Watch how easily these Solid glass poles can reel in a 4lb Florida Black Bass from way behind the boat!
I even get hung up in a lilly pad,but the solid glass rod prevailed where most hollow poles would not

fishing meathod trolling a live blue gill near the bottom
fishing barbless for safe catch and release

I wonder how flexible those stainless steel rods are
check out this quick clip Dave when you get a chance

I test out a Glass rod by bending it all the way just like an Ugly stick rod its built tough, yet its actually stronger because its SOLID fiberglass "not hollow"
I now own one of these poles and may actually get another..
You can fold the pole in half for easy storage, its unbreakable, watch the video and see
The tip actually bends all the way and touches the handle check it out,its built tough!

sorry I did not answer you sooner,

what I use for a reel is a shimano quick fire II
[Image: DSCN03031.JPG]

it is not an ultra light but I can put 4-8 lb test line on it comfortablty.

I transfer the reels from this rod to my ice fishing rods in the winter, I have 2 of them and they both are year round rods.

I realy like this reel because it has the quick fire casting trigger, rear drag and the battle drag leaver. Ya that is a lot for one little reel but well worth it.

you may have to get on ebay to find one of these reels, I have not seen them in the stores in years.

the rod I have in the photo is one I picked up 35 years ago for my back pack when my mode of transportation was a 2 wheeler. "motorless"[:p]

I agree and disagree with Flygoddess.

[Smile]

Although I own a Tenkara IWANA 12' (among many baitcasting, trolling, and fly rods), I recently bought a Kiyotaki 21, 7'. Which is even more compact than the IWANA.

Now my IWANA has a travelling companion.

Just got it last week. Our waters are still frozen (ice fishing). But at opener at end of Arpril. I would use a furled leader of 8' and add a tippet of 3 to 4'. Remember, I'm 6' 4", so long reach.

Well I understand now why the GoPro has that fish eye lens. You miss a lot of action with whatever camera you are using and you can't look up and down the shore or at your friend with the head cam...[Wink]
I am so jealous of your Peacock bass though.[Smile]
