[sly] Read about a neat way to do ice cleats, tried it and it works great. Buy some 1/4" sheet metal screws from the HW store, use a 1/4 inch electric screw driver like the black and decker, screw the screws into the heavy lugs of your snow packs and have a safe time on the ice. It works so well that it holds on even very slick ice. However, they are tough on wood floors and slick on tile floors. AND it is cheap

Nice idea. As slick as Strawberry was at the start of last year's ice fishing season I would have done this.

I saw this recently on story of the people that ran across Utah Lake and that is what they did. Attached is their photo. I am thinking of trying it out this weekend. My only question is does it only benefit you if you are on slick ice or there is barely any snow on the ice. I have Yaktraks but they are not as effective if there is just slick ice.

I have not been able to find slip on cleates that will fit my size 14 boots so this works great. It works in all kinds of snow or ice. Teach a man to fish and he will keep worms in the refrigerator..

I was thinking about inverted beer caps on straps?

wood floors probably wouldn't like them either.

It works good on wading boots. I haven't tried wearing them on the ice. The one thing I have found though, is that over time you lose a few screws. So keep extras on hand to replace them after a trip or too, and it doesn't hurt to check if you have a screw loose! [laugh][laugh][laugh][]

I heard this also works great on your ATV instead of tire chains.

Did this a few years back (yes, on a budget). Other screws don't work too well. The edges of the self tapping screws dig in best. Just remember to take em off outside.

So went up to the burbot bash and I could only find 3/8" screws so I took them and a good thing. One of the guys didn't have anything so I let him use my yaktraks and I tried out the screws. Because they were longer I put them on the outside which worked great except if I needed to run and push of with more of my toes or middle of my foot I would slip just a little but other than that it was great. It took me a second to get used to though, I was used to having something there that I could feel but I could not even tell these were on my boots which my mind said I should slip. I did step in water to see if they leaked water and still dry as a bone. This is what I will be doing for next ice season. The one think I would change is put a couple up the middle around the balls or toes of the boot. Maybe I will cut the screw off just a little

This is the second yr.for my cleats. The 1/4 inch sheet metal screws have not come out, not one. Sat on fish lake worked super. Five of caught 103 trout, 50+ perch. Fished 30 ft. Of water down 15_20 ft. Small white jigs, meal worms, and perch meat. The bite is lite, watch the line to move and set the hook.
