Weber River - 11/05
#1
Hey guys and gals, Sparky is a hunting dog now!!!!
This starts out as a fishing post but I'm cheating!!!! Went fishing on the Weber with Sparky and another dog that I'm baby sitting for and took the shot gun along in case. Wanted to get a duck for the freezer for training purposes. After fishing along the river for a good distance, (not much luck), I spotted some ducks in the river. Fished while heading back to the truck, got in the truck, drove down to where the ducks were, parked, kept the dogs in the truck (not gun trained, Sparky is 4 mos old), pulled my patented sneak, jumped em, knocked 3 mallards down in the river. Yipeeee!
Well, decided to try something. Went back to the truck and let em out. Walked back to the river, found the ducks in the river and told "Sparky" to go find em. Well, he and the other dog didn't know what I was talking about but they went muuuching along and when they got about 10 ft. from the duck in the river Sparky went over and grabbed it and brought it to me! Yipeeeeeeeeeee! Did it twice more, except the last one Sparky grabbed it by the wing tip and decided that it was his and carried it off for himself. No chewing, just licking!!!! The other dog (a 14 mos old Golden) wasn't interested (show vs field trial breeding?)!!!
Needless to say I praised him up an awfull lot and came home with some freezer ducks for training when he gets older. Still miss Bud but things are getting a little bit better. Well folks, what do you think? Did we do good? We think so! Sorry for the bragging about my "child".
Biggest regret - as usual, I had a camera but didn't take any pictures. I just never can make a connection when these things happen. Oh to keep this leagal I caught 2 browns, 1 rainbow and a white fish.

Sounds like a perfect day leaky. I havent fished the Weber for two years and I hope to get up there next week. I may have to pack the 12 gauge along as well. Were you nymphing for your fish? I assume you were because you caught whitefish, and they have small mouths. What are they taking up there right now? Will an egg and a prince do the trick, or do sow bugs and midges work better?

Anthony,

Wrong guy to ask! My standby is a size 16 prince and a grey scud. They weren't interested. 50% were snagged. I could see em but I wasn't trroughing the right thing. Problem was I wasn't serious - just out giving exercise to the dogs. Next time I'm going to try some different things, i.e. streamers, jigs, wolly buggers for the trout, and maybe eggs, pink scuds, etc. for the white fish. I only keep a few white fish and release all the trout. Any suggestions, especially for the white fish would be appreciated from anyone reading this post.

Is there any place where the prince nymph will not produce fish? It looks like I'll just go with a prince and an egg, if it don't work, then I'll go to the bugger. Hey leaky, what size shot do you use for ducks? Right now Ive got size two, but maybe thats too big. Should I buy 4's or stick with 2's?

You may have noticed that I'm not a mainstream kind of guy so keep that in mind! The majority of duck hunters like #2 steel. My preference is # 4 or 5! Too many holes in 2's and I've got them just as far out using 4/5s. I shot modified at "reasonable" ranges. Jump shooting in the river is even closer!!! Hey, join the utah flyway forum for good info.

Hey Predeator and Cowboy - post up and join in the discussionn!!!!!!! I know - not fishing!

Thats great Leaky and 4 months is a good time to start that training. I started my Chessys training earlier than that. But it was just basic comannads, sit, stay, down, come, heel. Here's a little something I did to get them use to the guns at home (it also helped to develope a soft mouth) I gave them baloons to play with. Yes they popped an awful lot of them over ten years, but I only had one dog that ever had a hard mouth, and getting use to the big guns were nothing at all for them. And there is a big difference between *show* dogs and fied dogs trail dogs.. Ya got the hunters and the pretty boys. Give me that scruffy scared up ole hunter any day, man they are just beautiful animals.
