Bear Lake Fishing Report:

Ice on Bear Lake is 8-12” thick at this time and there is about 4” of snow on top of the ice. Nighttime temperatures for the last week have been below zero every night with highs only in the 20’s so the ice has been getting thicker. The fishing for cutthroat trout, lake trout and whitefish really picked up over President’s Day weekend. Cutthroat trout and lake trout are being caught by anglers using 4-5” tube jigs or large jigging spoons (Swedish Pimples or Castmasters) tipped with cisco or sucker meat. Try glow-in-the-dark jigs which really seem to be working well. The best spots have been all along the west side of the lake from the marina south to the rest area. Anglers have been fishing for trout in water from 45-95’. Try to get away from other anglers and snowmobile/4-wheeler traffic. The more noise on the ice really spooks the fish and slows the fishing down. However, if you get away from the groups the fishing is typically much better. Whitefish have mainly been taken off the rockpile in 45-60’ of water using small jigging spoons or ice flies below a spoon. Make sure to tip your lure with a small piece of nightcrawler, wax worms or salmon eggs. Also, whitefish are biting well over weedbeds which are located parallel to shore from Gus Rich Point south to the rest area and off the pump house on the east side of the lake in water 20-35’ deep. Both Bonneville and Bear Lake whitefish are feeding on cisco eggs over the rocky and weedy areas. Remember cutthroat trout must have a HEALED FIN CLIP in order for them to be harvested.

Garden City Community Fishery Pond
Frozen and ice thickness can vary due to aerators in the pond. Be extremely careful. Water levels are low, but fish can be caught using small ice jigs tipped with worm or wax worms.

Laketown Reservoir
Frozen and about 8” thick. Avoid the inlet due to unsafe ice, but the rest of the pond is fairly solid. Jigging with typical ice lures tipped with crawlers or wax worms has been working well for rainbows up to 2 pounds. Most fish are averaging about 12-14” and are healthy looking.

Thanks for the update. Are they catching whitefish off Cisco beach? I need to get back over there before the ice is gone. Thanks for keeping us updated. J
