Minn-Kota motor troubleshooting
#1
I've got a Minn-Kota bow mount electric trolling motor (24v) with the manual foot control. When I run it at more than 50% it'll shut off after a few seconds of use. So all last summer I just ran it at 50% or less. Any ideas on what the issue could be? I put a bigger fuse in, which seemed to help, but it didn't fix the issue, and I obviously don't want to put too big of a fuse in so as to void its purpose. What's the largest fuse you run on your 24v system? Anybody know of a good mechanic for these electric motors? I'd hate to send it off and spend hundreds of dollars to find out it just needed a bigger fuse. Not to mention the motor is older so it's not worth a ton anymore either. Any info. would be great. Thanks.

Thanks Kent. If there aren't any places here in Utah county, I'll have to go up there.

I've got similar issues with my Minn kota. May be time to switch to motor guide. I've actually had two Minn kotas and both have had problems.

My 101 36 volt minn kota has a 60 amp breaker on it , hope that helps. I do know the bigger 24 volt motors draw alot of amps when on high. Good Luck

I've done that and they referred me to an authorized mechanic due to the variety of things it could be that's causing it to malfunction, motherboard, etc.

I took my MinnKota 55 Power Drive to Swede Richard at Croft a couple of years ago. He did a good job, fast, reasonable, recommended.

Swede is the Man. Highly recommend him !!! How big of a fuse did you install ?? For a 24 volt system you need two 60 amp breakers. There is a Marine supply store on 7200 South and State St.

So when it shuts off is it blowing the fuse? Because if not changing the fuse will do nothing to help the problem.

I forgot to mention that when I put the larger fusein, I also put a thicker guage wire in. But I can't remember how thick...I'll have to go check.

It sounds like others have seen this so I will defer to their experience, but if this unit is shutting down after running at a higher speed and isn't blowing fuses I find it hard to believe that it is the fuse or wire gauge at fault. It almost sounds like a heat issue and could be the motor itself overheating and shutting down or perhaps the heat from the current in the wires causing failure at a connection point such as a solder joint or butt connector. I'm just tossing out ideas.

I dont know if it is a cable drive or the electronic model, I dont know if it matters.
I have aPDV2 by minnkota. I had the same problem or something very similar. What happen with mine is I got some fishing line around to prop shaft and what happens is the line cause the motor to work harder and burns up the mother board in the elec motor.
I also had swede fix mine however it was not a cheap. Labor was nothing parts were mucho dinero. He did a great job. Oh yeah if you think maybe my warranty will cover not a chance. Fishing line is not covered.

One of these days I wont have to find things out the hard and expensive way..

I hope this not your problem...
