Cottonwood Cove Camping Question
#1
I went fishing out of Cottonwood Cove last week for the first time. I'm not really sure where or how to fish there (or anywhere for that matter [Wink] ), but I managed to catch a 5 1/2 lb stripper trolling a crank bait in about 30 feet of water. Otherwise the fishing was really slow. The kids had a good time swimming in the water, and we're thinking of going back this weekend and camping overnight.

Does anyone have any experience with the availability of camp sites at Cottonwood Cove? They're first come first serve, so I'm uncertain what the likelihood of a spot being available is.

I have looked at the camp sites and there are actually two areas. The area closest to the water (by the beach area) is almost always full. I was talking to the campsite volunteer a while back and he says most people are out there some point Thursday to grab a site for the weekend.

However, there is an upper campsite you pass when you are first coming into the cove, on your right. There is no shade or trees, but it is never full (according to the volunteer). I am sure the upper campsite is great this time of year, but watch out come summer.

I imagine that beach area would be great for catfishing. The water is clear and the sand provides a rather clean shallow area for the catfish to scour at night. Any idea if catfish are plentiful in Mojave/River area?

I have camped there a few times and the lower site does fill-up fast. Depending on the time of year I have gotten a site coming in Friday night. However, I have never not gotten a site in the upper campground. There are a lot of site in the upper not alot on the lower. Also there is a RV dump in the upper ther is not one in the lower.

Last weekend wasn't crowded. The lower camping area wasn't even half full when we got there Saturday afternoon. We had a nice over-nighter an got a little bit of fishing in. My kids are crazy and loved swimming in the water (too cold for a sane person IMHO).

There was a grasshopper explosion going on. Millions of them were walking along the ground from north to south in the campground area the whole time were were there. It wasn't a problem, but had my girls flipping out for the first hour or so we were there.

My wife caught a nice sized SMB along a rocky shore on the AZ side across from Cottonwood cove. We could see lots of them swimming around but the one she caught was the only one we managed to hook up on.

The wind was pretty rough and got to be too much for my little aluminum boat so we had to cut the fishing short.

I'm really liking that area.
