Winco Oysters

I have been keeping an eye on the Oysters in the Winco coldcase for a while and see the pile shrink fast when they stock it --

Now I got this hankering for a Oyster on the BBQ.

Has anyone tasted the Winco bi-valves (Oysters)?

I shop at Winco all the time there's one not too far from my house. The store in itself is a bit ghetto but the food there is the same if not better than walmart so I wouldnt see any problems with them. Plus sounds like your going to grill them so just thoroughly cook them should be fine.

I did a little surfering and found that all stores that sell Oysters have to have the Harvest Date Tag with the Oysters they are selling.

At Winco I asked and the gal what was the date on the harvest tag and she was a little taken back by my request. But she found the Harvest Tag which stated they were Harvested on Apr.1 and should be good till the 14th.

Well the post that told about the Harvest tag also said not to buy Oysters more than 5 days past the harvest date because Oysters actually start feeding on themselves immediately after they are plucked from their beds. And after 5 days they are much smaller and not as good after 5 days.

So I'm waiting till the 15th and going back for a fresh round two of Oysters on the BBQ... []

Use caution when buying seafood from Win-Co. []

The one in Orem had a great looking stack of flounder fillets at a good price while I was walking by, so I caved and bought 4lbs.

Well, that same night, I wanted to surprise my wife (who is getting sick of trout, but really wants some ocean fish) and I got everything ready to make a stellar meal.

Well, as good as they looked, they were total mush when I went to flip them in the pan.[mad] Completely fell apart. I'm no stranger to cooking fish either, so I knew they were bad.

I took them back the next day and traded for a bunch of salad shrimp, which were fine (hard to screw it up when they're already steamed).

I mentioned the fillets to the person working that counter and the agreed that they were bad, yet didn't do anything to remove them from the display.

Someone else was about to buy some and I stopped them (in front of the lady behind the counter), telling them my story.

So just be careful what you buy there. They obviously don't have the highest standards of freshness.

"What do you expect from a great price.... It's Winco [crazy]." I basically tell my dad only get some goodies and bag of some tasty sun flower seeds from them as well if the coffee is fresh up there I will snatch some but most of the time there coffee beans are old and got no oil on them any more. Disappointed in them. Oh well I'm sticking with Costco cheap coffee and amazingly fresh coffee that last my dad and I for 4 months [angelic].

My parents got fish from them one day and it wasn't that great [:/]. As well I'd rather catch my own fresh fish and eat it on the same day. I just hope I can head down to blue lake and catch some tillapia. [][][] One day I shall slay them out of the lake [laugh]
