I didn't post anything about it but, the second day I took out my new 25' Robalo Center Console, I had to get the tow of shame in.
Apparently the previous owner had the lower unit replaced by the guys on Lake Mead Pkwy. Aqua Marine. They gave him a hell of a deal on a "PERFORMANCE" lower unit. The unit was just replaced in early February this year.
The first day I took out the new boat it ran perfect. Couldn't be happier. Next morning same thing was running fine until I got passed Battleship Rock. All the sudden I hear a grinding noise, so I immediately slow down and go into neutral. Motor sounds fine and I don't hear the noise anymore. So I turn the boat around to head back to Callville. I throttle up just enough to get the boat to plain out and boom after 500 feet engine wants to go but no propulsion.
When we got back to the marina after a 2 hour tow of shame the guys at Callville got the boat up on the dry dock. Right after the boat was up in the air they knew the problem right away. There exact words were "you need a new lower unit". Apparently the pinion gear that makes everything work wasn't put together correctly, which allowed it to blow a huge chunk of steel off it and try to shoot it through the lower unit casing. Below are the pictures
The guys at Callville bay that work in the retail shop are very nice and do great work for not a huge mark up. He gave me the website to order a aftermarket lower unit which ended up being more than half off if you ordered a new one from Mercury. It also comes with a 3 year warranty. Ended up only costing us 1,342.00 for the part and labor.
I have heard both good and some very bad things about those guys at Aqua Marine. When I brought them the receipt with there failed part they told me that since I wasn't the original customer, the warranty doesn't transfer over. So I went and got with the owner I bought it from and they said they would just fix it for us. We said we don't want you to fix it we want the money back. They refused. So beware Aqua Marine.
Here are 2 videos of the boat after the new lower unit being put on. GOD I LOVE THIS BOAT!!!
